IL-2 Desert Wings - Tobruk

Isn’t that because of the rudder sensitivity? (my experience from the past) Try perhaps to set some curves either in the sim (to a limited extent as far as I recall) or some 3rd party application run outside of CloD.

Gave Tobruk a whirl today. I didn’t have much success with VR through VirtualDesktop, unfortunately. I remember using it with CLOD to good effect, but it didn’t work great with Tobruk for some reason… I might need to fiddle with my settings, or just wait impatiently for them to introduce native VR!

I agree that the flight model feels different than those in Il-2 BOX. The aircraft feel much lighter, but I definitely enjoyed the early war feel of the Hurricanes and Spits.

Have I mentioned that I can’t wait for native VR?

Interesting to hear light and floaty, for years many complained it felt “on rails”. Going to have to find what I did with my gear and give it a whirl again.

The re-paint of England looks good too. A lot of action going on in the desert. People keep shooting at me…

The Kittyhawk is my favorite. The graphics artist did a beautiful job on the cockpit. FM is just like what the others have said. Still adjusting axis curves and keystrokes.

Wish they could have separated the two theaters, but it is an old UI. Also find it odd the allies are labeled red while the axis powers blue, but hey.

Next up will try the bombers.

I’ve been using Quick Missions as a limited quick mission builder. You can select map, aircraft, AI, weather and time of day.

I wonder…can you rename the executable to the same thing that worked with CLOD? Sometimes the settings that match the .exe name will make stuff work…

Impressive work, it’s a bit much for me on the price. I’ll see about waiting for a sale in the future. Love the theatre, though.

My IL2 blitz is updating 6.5 Gb is this the new tobruk version and is it free to Blitz owners??

With Desert Wings, my update was 11 GB.

TFS also made many updates to CLoD.

Not sure why, but having all kinds of issues making key assignments to my x-55.

There is a discussion at simhq’s dover forum piper, may not apply to your issues but you might find it helpful

Thanks bish!

In the manual (don’t have it atm) in the FAQ section, there is mention of and a solution for when the game has a hard time dealing with Windows 10 randomly shuffling game controller IDs. I’m thinking of trying it.

Thanks chipwich, I did read their manual, but I’m still win7

Worked on sorting out TrackIR and controllers tonight in CoD. Finally got something very workable. The biggest difference was calming down TiR so that it doesn’t drift as much when looking through the sight. It also made the aircraft feel like it was tracking better. Really loving this sim now.

Had some target practice on a gaggle of Heinkels trying to rain hell on London. I know that this is a Desert Wings thread, but please allow me to sneak a couple of CoD in here before bedtime. Back to North Africa tomorrow.

Did they change the weather engine or you just edited a bit the colours of the screens?

Interesting re the controls and screen issues; neither have plagued me. I’m on a 100% fresh install of CLoD/DW, running TM warthog throttle, Viripl base with hornet stick, and MFG crosswinds., fwiw. TIR seems more or less fine too; running whatever stock profile it has.

Some other thoughts:
-Only flown the P-40 so far, but I’m really disappointed in the sound. Above a third throttle it doesn’t seem to change in pitch/rumble at all. Just droning lawn mower the whole time. Makes it hard to feel out what the engine is doing. It just really makes everything feel ‘flat’ and distant. Maybe other planes will be better.

-First mission in the P-40 campaign (“Desert Hawks” I think?), and I apparently missed the mission triggers to tangle with some italians. debrief made mention of the scuffle that I or my wingmen never saw. One thing BoX does better in general, is tell you what it expects you to be doing to complete the mission. And that relates to:

-Controls do indeed feel ‘floaty’; like the plane is suspended in mid air by rubber bands. Reminds me of BoX before all the flight model updates. Playable with my current control hardware; but would be frustrating with, say, a stock warthog. Turning off the head bob setting might help, will try that.

-If you’re going to be stingy with unit labels in the name of accuracy to real life challenges of military (and even civil!) aviation, that’s admirable. Less Admirable is sticking to that requirement with a draw distance that seems limited to about a mile, at best. Examples include my home airfield miraculously popping up below me, and needing to really zoom in on the map to find an enemy convoy for strafing.

-So far the two missions in the campaign I played were pretty basic; a run of the mill patrol (where I missed the action apparently), and a convoy strafe. Not unrealistic stuff, but doesn’t seem overly complex to engineer, either. Much has been said of the number of campaigns in the package, so just want to point this out. Perhaps as I get deeper things will get more interesting. By contrast, I’m coming from the last WWII campaign i flew being mid-way into the “Havok over Kuban” campaign for BoX, and that’s a ton of fun, with lots of great nail-biting action throughout the flight.

-Overall, I think glass half full is “look at what they’ve managed to turn CloD into!”; glass half empty is “it’s still CloD at heart.”

-Sure Part of this is I miss BoX :frowning: It’s come so far and evolved so much over the years, and DW really brings that into sharp contrast. With that in mind, I feel that if they never bring VR to it, the package is overpriced by about $10-$20, as while it is certainly a lot of work; it was a lot of work in an aging platform that’s been all but surpassed in many areas. If they do bring VR to it, the aging nature of the sim (and it’s visuals) translate into much higher VR friendly performance, and I think the value is there. With that in mind, my “review” is (for now) to go bearish and ‘wait and see’.

Especially hilarious when you consider the IL2 shows up twice in the title, and nowhere in the game.

Amazing how ham-fisted ubisoft was with the branding at CloDs launch.
