I’m not gonna lie,
I still run BMS on the DL, and the Dynamic Campaign is way ahead of anything anyone has offered and it’s 21 yrs old.
QFT!
which QFT?
Quote fo Truth or Quit F… Talking? lmao
I don’t feel free at all here at Mudspike.
And that’s a GOOD thing.
You all would be shocked if you knew my feelings on race, politics, the military, social media, automation or religion. Even my feelings on certain sims would seriously grate more than a handful of Mudspikers.
There have been a few occasions where, after a few drinks, I have wanted to unload here. But I know the standards and I know that those standards will be enforced. My inner troll (little “t”) is kept at bay due to a Mudspike culture that clearly has no interest in hearing my drivel. It is ALL about the moderation.
Former 4chan basement dweller?
Appreciate it!
I know how you feel, though…
I try to tell myself that if I can’t say something nice, I shouldn’t say anything at all.
While that may sound unbeligerent, one has got to consider the purpose of Mudspike.
We’re all about the fun in having flightsims as a hobby.
And that’s all there is to it, really.
HAHAHAH
Quote for Truth… Honest!
So long as it’s 4chan and not 8chan…
TBF I’m mostly disgusted by both.
We’re a pretty varied bunch – different backgrounds, ages, nationalities…it wouldn’t be hard to find differences in views! But we’re here to count rivets, not talk politics or values – and that seems to be the rule we all more or less automatically observe.
Ultimately we are a community because we have found common ground in aviation and sims – so there seems to be a mutual respect at work which, as you described, makes us hold ourselves to certain standards when it comes to posting.
I’m sure it occasionally does help to have Chris around to give us kids a cautionary raised eyebrow when we forget ourselves – but most of the time everyone plays nice, it seems (I was going to say “acts maturely” and then looked @komemiute and changed the wording ).
It does seem to be a unique community in the flight sim world and I’m stoked to be part of it - I just wish my time zone allowed me to actually fly with you guys more often!
You guys are all wrong!!! About life, religion, politics, and tv shows… and food… and beer!
And all the sims are all wrong!!!
Ahhhh!!!
Is it Christmas already?
Normally the threads in which we virtually hug and tell us we love each other and how this place is the best on the whole Internet happen around that time. Seems a bit early…
(Y’all are right though. Mudspike rules. )
Okay…but I am pretty sure we have discussed the value of counting rivets.
Something I’ve been trying to teach my kids that I appreciate most out of Mudspike culture.
Words matter
This truth has been under attack far too long. You compare against how people used to talk 100-200 years ago and it really becomes apparent. Vocabularies are smaller. There is less integrity in the things people say, and how they say them. Honor has taken a back seat. This is a byproduct of many things, internet anonymity a major culprit.
Would be cool if you could have an internet duel with real consequences.
Of all the things our parents taught us, the “stick and stones” refrain turned out to be the one that was the most wrong. Sure, in some contexts it’s true, but overall the modern world cares more about words than in the past.
The spoken word spoken face-to-face comes with context and the real risk of hurting or being hurt. The internet has no such limits. Now insofar as the BMS/DCS/IL2/WOP/StarCitizen/ED discussions go, it is easy to see where the tide is flowing in the respective forums. And it is totally easy to avoid getting wet if you understand the culture of the site. Often people intentionally post against the tide just to bask in the victimhood of being drowned by the majority. I would not go to Benchmarksims to talk about how great DCS is. Nor would I go to 777 to discuss ED’s 109. It is simply about knowing the audience and finding one that is like minded enough not to kick you out of the room. An example is that, back when I played the sim, I found the BMS forum to be quite harsh to the wrong sort of question. But I understand what makes that place unique. The game is free and the thousands of hours of development are totally pro bono. They don’t suffer fools over there and I really don’t blame them. One must know his place.
Autocannons at angels ten, I’ll rip your wings off buddy
In person there is an immediacy the internet does not grant.
When was the last time you told someone off in person by turning your back to them and plugging your ears so you were certain not to know a thing about their reaction until you’d finished speaking for 15 minutes?
Likewise, in person there is little chance that you will speak for 15 minutes if after your first sentence the person turns and leaves or interrupts you and interjects something.
Yet many times that is exactly what happens on the net, with people TL;DRing responses and taking words out of context, or going on so long they go from perhaps provoking thought to just stoking rage or pain.
The written word is an effective communication tool only for the effective communicator. For the average person, they lack the skill and experience (and possibly empathy) to accomplish the same thing with words alone that they could in person using body language and nonverbal clues in addition to their words. It is both a skill and a talent
All true.
