Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020

I’m still far FAR in the red from real flying. I’ll be 60 by the time I’ve recouped the investment :joy:

You win on fidelity and graphics, but I can land on the pyramids upside-down with one engine while on fire and get to have another go.

I know I am late to the party here… but what do I have to do to apply for Alpha/Beta participation?

I now have an ‘Insider’ account.
I’m not seeing anywhere to actually apply for a spot or submit my system specs.

I don’t think it is open at the moment. They seem to do it in ‘waves’ where they open/shut the sign up survey and allow for the uploading of machine specs (a dxdiag xml file), as they update the internal releases. Calendar-wise it is due to open up again, although I don’t know anymore than just that there has been a ‘tech alpha 1’ and then an ‘alpha’ and there is likely something else coming fairly soon if they maintain the same cadence.

When open it should be here:

I don’t know… Reality has its issues. Aircraft have sloppy controls and break down. Flying IMC at night is rather bland. Colors are washed out and contrast is really bad. And I have to wear bi-focals or I can’t focus on the instruments and the outside.
Also, you need to read and know the manual. They test you on it.

Yeah.
Still doesn’t beat real life stewardesses.

Great, thanks Fearless. I read that you should get a decent experience with even my modest internet connection, so I figure I should at least give it a try. I’ll keep an eye out for the next application window.

One good thing, from public reported sources (I don’t want to get thrown out etc) like this

https://www.geekwire.com/2019/microsoft-flight-simulator-cloud/

and

…is that the offline, hybrid and online modes will help with internet connections. The hybrid being described as where you can ‘pre-cache’ a flight and keep that downloaded, sort of like a cross between flight planning and a TruEarth Orbx complete download, where it grabs what you need up-front and then you can be completely offline.

It looks amazing, no doubt about it.

Anyone has an idea which location is this?

Hmmm OK, let’s try to find those locations.

1: Sion airport, Switzerland (LSGS)
2. Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw, Poland
3. Chambery airport, France (LFLB)
4. Queenstown Airport, New Zealand (NZQN)
5. Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans, USA
6. Uluru, Australia
7. EDIT: Tumling Tar Airport (VNTR)
8. Burj Khalifa, Dubai
9. no clue yet
10. Hongkong, the large building to the left is the International Commerce Center.
11. I haven’t been able to find the exact location yet, but the author said on some forum that it is in the area of Basel where Germany, Switzerland and France meet.

That round snowy mountain top in the distance looks vaguely familiar.
Similar to how Mount Rainier or Mount Adams stick out from the surrounding area. I doubt it is one of those though, the vegetation doesn’t fit.

Number 7 by SoapyDiamond is in the general vicinity of Lukla.

Oh well… that night screen reminds me of a common misconception in flight sim world - that the highways are lit at night along their entire length.

That is usually true only for stretches that go through some urban areas but is not the case for rural stretches (at least in Europe; the only exception being Belgium till not too long time ago and the Netherlands - @schurem could you please confirm?).

I mean fully lit highways going through the entire countryside look gorgeous on the screens and in flight but are nonsense otherwise.

Call to MS2020 testers here: Would you mind to check this issue and potentially report to MS?

Thanks!

Yeah it looks cool, and it makes up for the lack of vehicles lighting them up (the highways usually are very empty compared to real life), but at least in Germany they are not lit.

There is definitely a latin motto in there somewhere…

OK, I had to rework the English part a bit–evidently the Roman’s did not have a word for “aircraft”–however, think this captures the spirit of @fearlessfrog’s statement:

Per aerem volantes plaustra similis est, sed minus denarios

Perhaps a bit too long for a Mudspike motto…let me work on it a bit…

Yeah but you would do it for nothing so the salary doesn’t really count. You are just having fun.

Not sure about that. The mountains do not look like Himalayas.

Anyways, I just came across this map

Great idea indeed. Though I am still not able to put a finger on Number 7

It looks a bit like Courchevel Airport (France)
