MSFS 2024

Since the release I was playing MSFS2024 on XBox, since it loaded WAAAY faster on the console than my PC on the day of release (around 3 min vs 30 min).

I wanted to see if things got better on PC today so I installed the game again and am sitting at the loading screen again - for 20 minutes it loaded slowly but steadily amd now it stopped at “68% - Loading world data”. Already over 15 min passed with no progress. When I look into Task Manager I can see FlightSimulator2024.exe eating up all the CPU cycles (up to 100%) with 1,5GB RAM usage, few MB/s disk activity and basically 0 Mb/s of network traffic. There is something fundamentally wrong with this game launcher. Anyone running PC version have similar experience?

Note that the game runs fine from XBox on the same network (300Mb/s DL speed).

I’m not saying this will solve the problem, but maybe worth a try…

Thanks, will check it out. I read on FS forums that clearing up your game folders might help. So I went full in and uninstalled both MSFS2020 and 2024, checked if any loose folders remained and reinstalling 2024 from scratch just to be safe. I hope this helps, if not I’m waiting for the patch from Asobo…

Well, still not good. I’m not the only one, found this thread:

There is an interesting “fix” in the last post though.

It’s weird how this problem affects some people and not others. Very frustrating for anyone affected by it.

This is the worst major launch I have ever bought into. For my part I am happy. The XBOX loads quick and plays well. But having 10s of thousands of players access a game that exists mostly in the cloud is obviously going to creat a breaking point. Asobo blames 3rd Party non-flying addons. But the Marketplace is now closed yet people still fail to get past the load screen. They screwed up and millions of hours were wasted by players who paid considerable cash for the pain of staring at a screen.

I tried the trick with unplugging the internet connection that guy posted on redit, but the game will not even try to load anything when you try to run it (with the offline mode enabled in Xbox app).

But I didn’t surrendered. I started the game again, as usual the game loaded up to 68% so I left it there waiting for a miracle, nothing happened. Waited and waited, finally fed up with it I disconnected my internet connection and after few seconds reconnected it and the game started to load, and pretty fast too.

I’ve been playing it for some time now without any issues so far. On XBox on the other hand the game loads up nicely and fast, but after few missions it often locks up or even crashes back to dashboard. On PC it’s rock solid (at least for now).

It’s pretty weird. I hope Asobo sorts it out soon, because when the game runs fine it’s soo good.

So, I uninstalled it. Too buggy, too frustration, not really fun. I hope they patch it into a better state eventually.

Played some Gunship 2000 and felt loads better.

Small patch inbound December 2. Big patch December 9. Here’s hoping.

Just a heads-up: After the 12/2/2024 MSFS 2020/2024 update, be sure to reinstall the latest DLSS file (if you are using anything like DLSS swapper) because otherwise the update will revert you to a previous DLSS version, with possibly less performance!

The more I play MSFS 2024, the more I respect the old version of me who wisely waited two years to buy MSFS 2020. This sim is remarkable in the massive number of obvious bugs that survived through beta. It’s still fun. But the hours I’ve wasted setting, testing, recovering, and rebooting are gone forever. And this for generic airports that can’t hold a candle to MSFS 2020.

I think it is good for simple kick-the-tyres-and-light-the-fires-bush-stick-and-rudder-flying. For this mission the sim looks great (I mean as long as the servers stream what they should and when they should).

Though any attempt to do something more complex involving navigation and systems is an exercise in frustration for me.

Let’s give it some time to allow it to improve.

Are the bush fields in Papua New Guinea well recreated or are they just strips cut out of generic forests?

Any visuals that are autogen’d from bing terrain and satellite data are probably close enough. So my guess is that bush strips are OK and better than 2020. But airports currently are autogen. I read that MS/Asobo did this to stop the server hemorrhaging on opening day. So EWR looks nothing like EWR. It hardly looks like an airport. Same with NRT, JFK, LAX and any of the other 100’s of large airports that were given a human touch.

Interesting… I’m glad I’ve waited then. I am probably still living in nostalgia-world…but am still enjoying my X-Plane 11 install pretty well…

X-plane is hands down a better sim, at least as I perceive what a sim is supposed to be. But I switched to MSFS because I wanted something pretty to play in the living room. And I take a lot of joy flying with the controller. I use an MS Elite that rivals a decent RC radio for precision. I taped winecorks to the thumbsticks to allow a bit of throw. It’s so much fun that the thought of hunching over a HOTAS has become about as appealing to me as eating Roquefort. MSFS 2024’s career mode will alone make it worth the money once they get it ironed out.

Just 4 years ago, we couldn’t even fantasize about a sim looking like this…

I’m quite impressed Asobo modelled that.

The seem to have updated the Career a tiny bit this afternoon. There are now more helicopter SAR missions than you could ever complete. The landings have been quite challenging.

On the negative side, Martial at Asobo has committed to not include any trim on the H125 because “it is not equipped in the actual Airbus helicopter”. This is BS on a couple of different levels. 1-It’s an option. 2-Force Trim is actually on the Asobo H125 stick!. 3-…Well who cares? They’re committed to keeping it as is so…moving on. I’ll just fly the thing with full forward thumbstick and it’s playable for short periods.
