Fun stuff so far tonight! Had a good showing of about 6 or 8 guys coming and going throughout the afternoon…
Many thanks to @fearlessfrog for his insider knowledge that got us moving on the right path…it isn’t quite as intuitive as one might expect, but by the second or third event I think it will be much easier to figure out how to join and invite people…
I first spawned in over at Homer where @boomerang10 was cooling his heels…so flew the 10 minutes over to Nanwalek, AK…
@fearlessfrog and Heatblurred doing some bounce and gos at this challenging little strip…also had some non-Mudspike folks come through…
I don’t think I saw any of the Mudspike participants hit “Optimist Hill”…after having witnessed dozens of impacts all throughout the day with the general public…
@fearlessfrog was flying a taildragger that had some massive barn door flaps that really helped him with this tiny strip. I think he could have landed, stopped, and take off again all in the distance that some of the rest of us were struggling with…
@Aginor dropping in with the DR-400…fun little aircraft!
After exhausting our tires at Nanwalek we headed over to WX53 / Bugalaga in Indonesia. Definitely the most interesting airfield we visited with its crazy slope…
Then on over to St. Barts in the Caribbean…probably the most challenging because that darn hill really makes it hard to get enough drag on the airplane. We had some planes end up on the beach…not a horrible proposition in such a beautiful place!
Then a quick jaunt over to St. Maarten…
I had to drop out for dinner…but will be back on in a bit…!
OK, up and running. So far. XBox handle is now: JAYAREMS for the group thing if someone can add me. Still pushin buttons to get in
Alrighty…a few margaritas and I’m heading back in…
I got home from a biz trip, kissed the kiddies goodnight, and began downloading at around 2145 EDT. At 2245 I’ve got 24.5 GiB, so need another 3 hours most likely. Will not make it tonight, but would love to tomorrow night. Have fun boys. XBox tag: ChipwichDB
Another great session later in the evening. Still working out some of the knowledge transfer on how to best hook up…I’m not that bright, so it takes some time. BUT…we did manage to all get in the same airspace together…
Me and @jross sporting matching 172s…
@saghen, @fearlessfrog, @jross, and I think @Chuck_Owl might have dropped in for a bit…this was Half Moon Bay…some beautiful default scenery…those coastlines are just unreal…
Then we headed over to San Francisco…
Where the masses of public gamertags and AI are hanging out…it was hilarious…and cool…and frightening…haha…
Our foursome working our way up north to the city…
Flying off @fearlessfrog’s wing…
He gave us the tour of the Bay…
And convinced us all to commit suicide by flying under the bridge…interestingly, though we all hit the “wall” that exists under the bridge…me and @saghen actually survived…
Some folks dipped out for dinner and me and @jross and maybe @Chuck_Owl (he wasn’t on Discord) headed further up the coast in the Icon A5…
Honestly…the visuals and lighting are so good it looks more like GTA V than a flight sim…
Most definitely… simply stunning.
My Xbox gamertag is WarPig4291 if anyone wants to add me. I spent a few hours tonight figuring stuff out, it’s going to be fun. Setting up controls is a pain compared to IL2 or DCS, but it’s doable.
I had a ton of fun last night! The chaos of the skiramp take-offs from WX53 were a joy to experience!
That WX53 spot was insane.
Its altitude caught me off guard (I cold started my 152 there and I had to put the mixture at 35% or so to get some decent power) and that first initial hill was way steeper than I thought.
Throwing my gamer tag into the hat: ClutchTomcat88
Added to the list at the top.
My gamertag is fmdckr81

thx
My gamertag is schurem but I won’t be getting in on the goodness until the G2 gets released, as my cockpit is configured such that I sit with my back to the desk that holds the screen. A sim without VR is useless to me
Quite literally!
2020 may be the year to hop on the VR bandwagon too, we’ll see how the 30xx release goes in a couple weeks!
FWIW, I was a bit underwhelmed without VR - as a flight simulation experience. She’s shore b purty though.
That’s the good news. The bad news is, based on my experience elsewhere (this is a SWAG), with my PC it would need to be run in “Low End” mode with simple aircraft.
I think XPlane 11 with Vulkan will perform better; I spouted off somewhere here that a good thing FS2020 had going for it was it was [should have been] written in the era of DX12 (and Vulkan, but of course that’s not MSFT). Then I find out it’s DX-11, not -12.
The same source (I’ll look for it later but I looked at a lot of stuff so…) indicated they might look at it later. Or was it they would do it? Don’t recall.
So, in VR I may be out for FS2020. Which means it will collect dust. Have to see what performance updating they do. Seems I can do the manual cache thing and turn off online data downloading as I fly. This sounds a LOT like XPlane + that Ortho thing. Just perhaps a bit more convenient UI…some kind of UI where you ‘color in’ a map of the earth; specify quality; click “do it”; etc.
My earlier suspicions of this being a ‘tech demo’ for MSFT haven’t been fully answered.
I flew some of the MD-82 last night in X-Plane…and though I love a lot of things about the new MSFS, my X-Plane install with ortho still looks great and the flight dynamics just feel more natural still. With that said, I would love to walk away from P3D and FSX and just have MSFS, X-Plane, and AeroFly as my civil aviation sims. All three do some unique things better…so I fear I’ll never have a one-stop shop for sims.
Same here. My hope was/is that the Sim World would finally, finally, get over the pretty graphics thing with this so we could move on. How much more visual fidelity do we need (crave?). Some of the FS2020 screen shots look like real life - but they are screen shots.
Performance: I still say I should have enough machine to run this in VR, with believable graphics, at 60+ FPS. But the target is moving for Dev’s - the general public want more visual fidelity; effort is spent on the Next Visual Thing (NVT (C)). Dang, I sound like ‘that guy’, circa 2000, on this subject
AI: the ATC isn’t much better than in FSX/P3D, really. Sure, it’s better than nothing, but, IMO, It’s an incremental move. I have no real desire anymore for the structure there (too much like work) but many other people do. Note I’ve not tried what are simple things in the RW concerning ATC yet. Can you ask for a deviation for [the glorious-looking] weather in the sim from ATC and have it respond in a believable way?
It does illustrate, esp. after last nights foray, the chaos the real [aviation] world might see if it where an airborne free-for-all!. I’ve said it before, in other contexts, that ATC would never be able to accomplish what they do if the pilots weren’t as skilled as they are. No algorithm is gonna manage the FS2020 version of chaos.
