I had something like that in mind (as opposed to just repeating “so smooth” and “silky smooth” all over and over again):
I believe there will be more analytic videos out there soon from some more down to earth simmers. I am looking forward to them.
Got my own simple “pancake” test ready - a flight from Speyer over Mannheim to Mainz representing the kind of flying I usually do in MSFS. Two days ago I measured Sim Update 4 performance, was downloading Sim Update 5 yesterday, and will hopefully run Sim Update 5 test today. Once done, I will post the results (so far, just sitting on the runway quickly this morning, the perf boost was about 15-20%. Wow).
I should have run the test in VR but yeah, there we go…
I hear you. It was an initial impressions video, and his impressions was just that
But there’s an important point as well, as just looking at the frametime has its limitations too. It’s easy to get caught up in the numbers instead of how it looks and feels.
But number are easier to compare.
I managed to complete the update yesterday evening, today I tried a short flight. Had one CTD and two multi-second freezes . How is the stability for everyone else?
Updated today. Stability while updating was bad, but in flight all seems to be fine. I do suffer from some weirdly jumpy aliased edges around things, might just be how TAA works or I messed up some setting somewhere? It looks a bit like heat blur.
Trying to download some of the World Updates, and the sim keeps crashing in the content manager too… Very annoying
Hm… Updated and I’m disappointed.
If anything, performance is worse. Now the movement is jerky, like moving around in steps, even if the motion is fluid between the steps. Really strange.
When I started MSFS the first time after the update, it crashed to desktop. Tried again, and that worked.
I wonder if something is the matter with my installation? Or maybe the update? Shouldn’t Sim Update 5 improve the world map so that you get textures all the way down, instead of the grey surface? I still have the grey land surface.
In case the problems happen in VR only, maybe try also to play a bit with the OpenXR Developer Tools - like switching on/off “Use latest preview OpenXR runtime”, Motion Reprojection or perhaps to use SteamVR instead of OpenXR.
Yeah, I will.
I tried MSFS again. Fresh PC start and Windows boot. Worked great…for a while. Suddenly the headset blacked out. Esc to pause. Ctrl Tab out and into VR and all was good again. But the stepping/stutter/pausing was evident.
Shut MSFS down, opened OpenXR dev. tool and set Render Scale to 100% and motion reprojection to always on. Started MSFS…CTD.
Will try some of your suggestions to see if I can find a root cause. If not I’ll just let it sit for a while. Update 5 is big one and is bound to break some stuff. Plus, there was an OpenXR update, recently… Going to see if I can copy somebody elses settings too.
Another issue I found was the elevator trim in the Cessna 172. It’s bound to an axis and jumps between center and max up/down. Works fine in the Cessna 152. Go figure!
In case you installed also the SDK, you can fire up the sim by “fsdevmodelauncher.exe” located in YourDrive:\MSFS SDK\Tools\bin". This will launch the sim without all the vids at the beginning. I am using this launcher for almost a year with no issues.
