Mudspike DiRT Rally 2.0 - December Rallies [COMPLETE]

Well that was nerve racking! Man Finland is fast. I got to get over the fact that when my codriver says jump I feel the need to floor it.

Thankfully hardcore damage was off.

Wow, intense jumps at Finland. Figured most everyone would be taking the Audi so I took the MG. A mistake in each stages 1 and 3- notably 1- cost me. Got a bit optimistic and ended up in a tree. Finished and radiator replaced. These Group Bs are good fun, raw power.

Drove in a bit hot over the blind crest and ran out of real estate.

First shakedown…

I’ve tried the Peugeot and the Audi in time trials so far and have not survived a single stage yet with either. I keep puncturing both rear tyres. I can confidently say that does not increase stability.

It feels like the Audi’s front-mounted engine and longer wheel base make it a bit easier to control than the tiny mid-engined Peugeot (and MG Metro probably).

But I like the cute tiny cars with 400BHP in the back!

Good for you Johnny! By the looks of that Audi, you might be buying a few rounds for your crew later!

Thanks Dan - but I can’t get it repaired. I have auto repair on but they never fix anything. When I select “Repair Vehicle” it just says auto repair is on and where I can switch it off. How I get them to repair it before trying the stage is a mystery to me. Maybe I should just start the stage and see if it appears in a repaired state.
I did two shakedown runs and on the second it still had the damage from the first one.

@Johnny It should be ‘magically’ repaired when you start the next stage

I will try to get a stage in today… I want to set up my wheel (it is a bit of a PITA to swap out the HOTAS though), but I also need to finish the Xmas flight, so might get that done instead?

Update: As much as I pride myself on my ability to multitask, I much prefer to focus on one thing at a time. Also a bit of a boo-boo with my flight planning means I really want to get the Xmas flight finished today. I have done all the ground work (pun intended) so just have to fly the route now. Wheel and rallying can wait until tomorrow.

Well I’ve gone and messed up good an proper! Today I drove the whole rally in the quattro. I took it nice and easy thinking that I’d get a banker in and then do it faster.
Can’t do that! Now my slow times are permanent and my event is over! :sob:
The first stage I actually did reasonably well anyway, but just before the end - about 50 yards away, I lost steering control (even though it’s a straight! - that’s gamepad steering for ya!) and smashed into a tree.
Quickly reversed out and put my foot down. No directional control and smashed into a tree the other side of the road!
T’rriffic! :sob:

Steering is pretty awful for me with the X360 'pad for now. Can’t make small adjustments so I kept sliding into the ruts at the sides, and if I try to make a larger one it just turns into whatever solid thing is waiting for me! So it’s a bit frustrating, but I’ll see if I can improve things for the next rally.

I feel you, same here with the Xbox controller. Especially high speed sections. It’s quite OK in the lower power cars but with these beasts I feel like I’m driving drunk. Still haven’t dared to put in my times because I keep hitting the ruts in Finland

It’s weird - I just now had a look on the team site and it shows me as not having competed in anything

*btw I fiddled with the settings for the steering and it is a bit better (at least in GpA cars) but needs more work.

I know exactly where you are coming from @Johnny

I tried using a controller for Round 1. The only reason I didn’t come last is because Snowy missed/forfeited a stage…

I am setting my wheel up today.

Unfortunately I can’t use my wheel. Well that’s not quite right - I can’t use the pedals.

I am going to try and use the toe brakes on my Saitek Cessna pedals as that may well work and is not such a problem for me. Hopefully it will be okay, but that means switching the wheel and HOTAS each time - which was why I have a separate desk for my G29 in the first place… I’ll use my TM RGT with the Cessna’s though. I would have kept using that instead of buying the G29, but it’s just so small.

  • I just had a thought. Maybe it would be better to set up the RGT on the desk (where my G29 currently is) and just move the pedals over instead. Or even use the G29 wheel with the Cessna pedals

Even though the Audi is the best sounding of the lot, The Pug was always my ‘go to’ for a Group B car.

Well, I made a total hash of Stage 1… two off piste excursions and one roll.

But at least I have a time on the board and it was much better using a wheel. At least I am only 30 seconds behind the leader after Stage 1, not 30 minutes like last time

I have to tweak some settings though. Mainly add some more degrees of rotation so I am not overcorrecting as much.

Yeah, and even though I am launching the game from Steam and have F12 bound as the screenshot key. It isn’t working?

The thing I Ioved most about the Audis I owned was the roar of that 5 cylinder engine with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection! Just out of this world!

I got the RGT out of the attic and connected up. Cuppla issues - the FFB is gone and there’s no centering spring, either. Also the clamp had broken when I bought the G29 and I bodged it with a plate of wood - which worked at the time, but now it’s working loose very quickly.

Despite that, it’s amazing how awesome this is with a wheel! I used my rudder toe brakes as intended - they are okay but very sensitive due to the short radius of the axes.

Did Finland again - until I got a puncture - in the quattro, and wow - what a difference! By the time I got a puncture (in pic below - yes, I’d clouted a signpost) I was already well over 90 seconds faster than with a gamepad and it felt like…

driving. :+1:

btw @Harry_Bumcrack - I used F12 for that shot - works fine for me, though I have had times in the past when it hasn’t worked, too. Think I posted about it here as well.

Just did the first stage again - much better time! I got the FFB on my RGT wheel working again and it was pretty awesome - though my shoulders were well knackered by halfway through

Watched the replay and took 112 screenshots! Don’t want to bore you all, so here’s just a baker’s half dozen - I didn’t get above 5th gear, mostly in 4th and 3rd. I learned when i first got this game and drove in VR that this was the best way to get a reasonable time without flying off the road - and it worked! Not a single wheel off the gravel this time

The clamp was loose the whole way, though, so had to keep pushing the wheel back onto the desk! That was a bit hairy…

Off we go…

and just to prove I made it to the end without hitting anything:

I can’t see the times any more on the Dirt Rally website team events - I don’t think I was that fast but it was a good run anyway

Two down one to go.

Very happy with Stage 2.

4.12 plus change, one spin but no damage to the car and I made up a bit of time

Still no screenshots.But I think I know why F12 wasn’t working - I didn’t have Steam overlay enabled.

Will check.

Yep that was the problem.

Re-ran the stage as a time trial. Made ‘good’ use of the jumps this time but was over a second slower:
