Dear Mudspiketeers,
as some of you may know I was the Company Commander for B Co. 229th AHB for two years until circumstances changed and I stepped down. I was taught the fundamentals of huey flying from 2 real life huey pilots an American and an Australian who also piloted gazelles. I was taught gunnery and advanced techniques by a rl Dutch AH64 pilot (retired)
Another great tutor who took me for all my exams and checkrides is an experienced UH 60 pilot who is still serving, if I can pass on any of the stuff I learned to help people enjoy choppers more then it will not be wasted knowledge
I never realized how much I missed it until I helped out @Scoop and then joined him last week on a low level heaven training night.
Anyway I have got the bug again and whilst I cannot commit to 3 nights a week I would like to propose a fortnightly helicopter session and rather than doing lots of training we learn as we do.
I will come up with a mission that will incorporate an element of learning but will be first and foremost fun.
If you can leave a post with your favourite rotary craft I will build them into the scenario.
Also differentiate between slick and gunship flying if you plump for huey or hip.
If this idea appeals and we can get people interested within mudspike then once the hind and Apache are out we can learn the system s together and share the knowledge
Iāll be up for that. The DCS Huey is my preference and happy to start off slick with my longer term aim to get better at being a gunship. I can start it up, pick up hover and generally not ever die, but Iād love some more info and experience.
Sounds great! Any machine would be fine for me. Iād have to refresh on it a bit to start it up etc, but that Iāll do offline prior to rotary club night.
Hip or Huey would be best I reckon, perhaps easier and more fun if we all fly huey in a big disorderly gaggle.
I prefer the Hip but Iāll hop on a Huey happily also.
I am notoriously bad at being able to commit to a session, however if thereās a set time, that makes it a bit more possibleā¦and I am really keen to fly with you guys if I can, even if it is only sometimes.
A friendly reminder to use the global time function when talking session times - makes it easier for us upside down folk to understand when to rock up
Thanks so much for the offer Cib. Iām in with the Huey because thatās what I mostly familiar with, but open to others. Iām also in the @fearlessfrog category of knowing just enough to be dangerous. Eastern US time zone if that maters. I bet @smokinhole might enjoy this too, since he is getting some RL rotor stick time.
Yas! I am interested in this! I have 'em all (gotta keep the shoe collection current, as @BeachAV8R says). Huey and Mi-8 are the primaries but I do like the Black Shark as well.
Only problem I have with the shoe collection analogy is that I apparently forget how to tie themā¦
Definitely interested when the times work out. I have all the helosā¦semi proficient (cough) in the Ka-50. All of the other ones I can fly fineā¦but systems-wise Iāll have to get up to speed. I love sling load type stuff and logistics. So if we end up doing transports with armed escorts Iād probably be better in the āass and trashā roll as it were.
Thanks for the response. It will be a juggle to incorporate the time zones.
Saturday morning is a possibility or late evening would probably cover the US/Canada and the EU. Any thoughts.
Also some light reading for those who are of that persuasion
The following link should give you the Huey Operating manual

Honestly Iām most comfortable and capable in the Gazelle. I can fight the KA-50, but I spend the majority of my time fighting the autopilot. I was reasonable in the Huey, but way out of practice in it now.
Maybe pick three dates/times that work for you and then do a poll? Scheduling can be tough so picking mid EU/US time and try to accommodate the majority.
You probably already know this but using the flight director mode gets rid of the autopilot while keeping the stability augmentation. I find it way more enjoyable to fly.
