New project from Il-2 BOx studio

Subjective I’m fine with, particularly if “known tactics” like the Thach Weave work (which requires the good AI to go along with the good flight model and the good campaign :sunglasses:).

An Su-27 having a datalink while a F-15C from the same pack not only hasn’t got its SA page, it’s missing any form of datalink even with AWACS… that’s just… biased :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

It’s the P-40 in IL2 where, as a westerner, I first felt like I was being trolled. Jason would vehemently disagree, I’m sure, since he was still the project head at that time. But I felt then and am convinced now that it was the Russian way of saying “Lend-Lease gave us s***!” I will always love IL2 (old moreso than new) and RoF will forever be a 7-year near-nightly experience that renewed my love of flight and introduced me to my now best friends. But the arrogance and hard-headedness that was once part of the charm now seems downright hostile. Today they enjoy a market within a new like-minded sphere. They don’t need me anymore. And I don’t need them.

The P-40 specifically has been mentioned, repeatedly, as an example of it’s “research.”

Meanwhile I’ve enjoyed it much more in Tobruk over the last little bit.

It’s a great plane in Tobruk - no Spitfire but a very good alternative to a Hurricane (or Gladiator!) over the desert…

Just like the reports from the time say :joy:

Given the heritage they’ve got on their hands, I’d be surprised if Mitsubishi or Kawasaki don’t have some sort of preservation effort that keeps as much information as possible. The only hurtle would be that said initiative would probably demand as much accuracy as possible and might want to be in the loop, but I’d say that’s to be expected and a worthy price to pay for that information.

Now, if the Japanese MoD is as paranoid as the Russian MoD? That’d be both depressing and hilarious.

I’d call it deprarious.

Provided, the 1CGS wasn’t fibbing when they had to go and get information on the La-5 from the MoD. I don’t know anymore, I don’t believe a thing coming out of them anymore.

That reminds me of a book I read many years ago.

Concerning getting information on production numbers, parts stores, and technical drawings from Mercedes-Benz for old race cars like the SS, SSK, SSKL etc:

“several of our inquiries came back with replies that the company would love to help, but pointed to the accuracy of our Norden bombsights for why they were unable to provide more specific information to us at this time.”

In the last talking video (not game showcase like this one), whoever it was said that their last producer told them Pacific theater would take too many resources so they couldn’t. Now that he’s gone, they are going to try to do it because they know how to do it with the resources they have.

The fact that he went to do it himself after leaving AND they said they will tackle it after Korea shows a change of mindset in at least one side, but in a I said/they said scenario we can’t know who.

I’m not going to link the reddit post that really ignited the current discussion, but Jason said that internally he was told the management had no interest in the Pacific, as well as thinking flying over water from carriers was boring.

So there’s that.

Yeah, flying over water from carriers is boring.

While, flying over an infinite, snow covered steppe is as compelling as it gets.

Gat-dayum.

Reminds me of when I contacted the German archives for info about the Fokker Dr.I and got a polite reply that they had nothing pre 1945…

on the other hand L-L Spit was a blast in IL-2. all new sims just botchered that plane

just kiding. in fact it was ‘too good’ in that sim and all later sims have it more accurate now, even WT.

so there is that. I mean it isnt rule of thumb always. and maybe our personal preferences can also alter our preceptions.

I think an important concept is “relative performances”.

I mean in the end the fundamental part is that all planes work in a credible way relatively to the others.
Of course to strive for accuracy is really important but as long as the “error” (as small as it can be made within the realm of money and time of course) is spread evenly among all the elements, absolute rivet-counting perfection is not needed.

Yes exactly! Get the look and the sound right. Incorporate some of the idiosyncrasies that made the machine unique. You know the weight, HP and wingloading. You’ve got enough to make 90% of players happy.

And the other ten percent live on hoggit, to begin with.
