Noob question about Meta Quest 3S and VR?

Hello,

I never bought into the VR gaming thing, kinda thought it was stupid. Hell, if I want to move while I game I’d go exercise first. lol anywho…

Some of you know I’m big into guns and go to the gun range at least once a week. Well, I went over to a friend’s house and he had one of those quest things so I tried it on and he had a realistic gun range, with a gun control that had the right weight and feel… ended up loving it. So, for a long time, couple of months now, I was thinking about getting one just for that. Fast track to today, just ordered the just released Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition, which is the same thing but in Xbox colors and has a xbox app so you can play cloud games via xbox.

But wondering, does anyone have any knowledge in Meta Quest? How it works, does it work well for games? I saw a video of many games I own and play being played, ie: DCS World, Rally Racing, PGA Tour Golf, Assetto EVO… etc etc How does that work to play them on a quest.

Got a 30 day money back guarantee… so if I don’t like it, back it goes.

THX.

You will need Meta Quest Link installed on your PC. This will allow to connect your VR gear to your PC either via USB cable or Air Link (wireless). From there you will be able to launch e.g. Steam VR and VR games. My son owns Meta Quest 3 and I did tried it with AeroFly FS 4 (works great), MSFS2020 (mixed results), Project Wingman, VTOL VR (this one is fun too!), Half Life Alyx. There are also many VR apps that can be run standalone on the VR gear, no need to connect it to anything other than the internet. You will also need a meta account - nowadays almost everyone have facebook account so it’s not a big issue.

I didn’t know there is a version dedicated for XBOX, I guess it’s less convoluted, because at first running this on PC gave me few headscratches. But as always google is your friend.

I don’t much about the 3S, but have a lot of PCVR sim time in the 3. It’s a great headset, once you add a head strap and extra battery, if you are going wireless.

Maybe someone can chime in on the 3S.

Unfortunately I can’t answer questions on the “S” version but when looking to replace my Reverb G2 and looking into 3 vs 3S the winner definitely looked to be the regular version 3. Seeing several folks here and reading about their experiences, especially since they were upgrading from HP Reverbs it looked the way to go. I did get the larger 512GB version but I think the smaller 128GB would be perfectly fine if you aren’t using it standalone and it’s connected to a PC.

I saw a quick headline on the new Xbox version but hadn’t dug into it yet. Give it a go and see how it goes for you.

DCS and original Assetto Corsa are my main Q3 duties and they are pretty amazing. AC EVO still needs some work (early access) last time I tried but once they get it ironed out I’m sure it will be awesome as well.

from what i have read the 3s is a slight downgrade of the 3 … the 3 I have found to be absolutely fine for DCS, I have the 128gb and aslong as you get a good usb C to usb C cable it will somewhat charge whilst in use so you can get a good 2-3 hours on one charge

I have been extremely happy with the Quest 3, using Virtual Desktop to link wirelessly to my PC. Huge upgrade from the Reverb G2 in terms of tracking and user-friendliness. Great clarity, and wonderful controllers.

Do check out both Into the Radius games (survival shooters) as well, the second one has really hit its stride.

I’m on my third quest headset. It’s my favorite PC peripheral and the only thing that entices me to occasionally turn the PC on. These days, 99% of my e-entertainment time is on the XBOX. Get the upgraded strap and, unless you are going wireless, get the Quest branded link cable. There are cheaper cables that work just as well, but it’s hit or miss. Going wireless is preferred these days. But I’ve had poor results and I like that the cable keeps the headset charged. Try to just enjoy the headset for a week or two before doing deep dives in how to make it perform better. But it’s inevitable that you will. When you do don’t do the old fashioned thing and go to a forum and ask “how do I make my Q3 perform better w/ …?” Use ChatGPT or similar. It will save you many hours of trial and error. The headset performs just fine out of the box anyway.

the biggest difference 3S vs 3 are the lenses .

3S has the fresnel lenses , older tech from the 2 gen - small sweetspot , distortion around the edges .

3 has the newer pancake lenses - edge to edge clarity .

if I was me , would go with the 3 , no S

Hey not sure what the xbox version means but you would want to get a regular Q3. DCS works like normal where you use your HOTRAS and mouse to control the plane and all. The race games are similar you can use your wheel and pedals in the game.

like nevo said the Q3 has better lenses…

Ahem!

There is a vr freebies and demos thread here that might offer you way to explore vr for a bit without having to put down any money until you’ve dialed in what interests you as far as types/genres of games…
