NVIDIA RTX 3000 series

Seems like trouble in Paradise.

Very interesting. And it will be even more interesting to see how this is handled…

Didn’t the 1080s catch on fire or something when they first launched? I believe Nvidia mentioned that the first rounds of 3rd party cards weren’t allowed to be as good as the FE cards. Looks like mechanically nerfed OC to keep them from beating the FEs.

That was a good find, thanks!
It’s going to be go big or go home on these cards then, good to hear ASUS is overbuilt on this issue as well. I like their products, although my GPUs have typically been MSI.

It was also really nice to see one of the factors that explains why different brands have different prices for “the same GPU”, other than the cooler itself.

EVGA tackled the issues just in time: https://forums.evga.com/m/tm.aspx?m=3095238&p=1

Though this does show the problems when you deliver the reference boards and chips so damn late to your partners. I hope Nvdia draws a lesson from this.

Saw this posted at a DCS VR group on Facebook:

Sup , just to let you guys know , got my 3090 today , I own an hp reverb that run trough 180% steam SS , before my 2080ti was at 40/45 fps , now its between 60 and 80 caucasus and p51, everything ultra maxed out , msaa x2

I9 9900k oc 5ghz

32gb ram 2400mhz(3600mhz is coming tomorow)

RTX PNY 3090 24GB bru

I would think this comes down to the VRAM quantity firstly, followed by memory speed and then raw GPU power. It would be interesting to know definitively but we cannot isolate those components of the video card in the same way we can on the rest of the tower’s components.

Would be interesting to see how it affects loading times as well.

I think Vram is overrated. It does not do a lot for speed. It only takes away from speed when it’s exhausted. Which it‘s most likely not in the above mentioned test case.
GPU raw pixel processing power is what we see here. High res with SS.

A 3080 with 10 GB can probably pull 55 to 70 fps, which means on reduced graphic settings it should be comfortable in VR most of the time.

That‘s my theory, maybe somebody owning the card can deliver the proof?

Some people are actually selling IMAGES of 3080’s on ebay…
If anybody is contemplating buying anything off ebay, READ the description and remember that the only thing the seller is risking is his ebay account.

Disclaimer:

DO NOT BUY THIS!

(No, I don’t mean that in a Mudspikean ”not recommended” way)

Oh, that‘s a name that triggers memories. Although very hazy ones. I think this was a VGA or even SVGA card? Before I had an NVIDIA Riva 128? And then 3Dfx Voodoo started the 3D revolution, and instead of the Voodoo 2 later I opted for NVIDIA again, not sure which card or why… geforce maybe? Because it was cheaper? Then 3Dfx went away and ATI got in.

Something like that. There even was a 3D capable NVIDIA card before the Voodoo, but all I’ve seen it do was render a tea pot - it was quite bad and could not run games. It lacked power and software support.

Not sure if I got this all right

Voodoo5 was SLI-on-a-card and it ruled. It was the most extravagant purchase I had ever made up to that point. Maybe ever. My current set of controls is pretty sweet too

Double V2 was pretty mean back in the days, I imagine. A quickly tried to list all my former GPU‘s, but only a few actually come to mind. No clue what I used to have between 2000 and 2010 :brain: :cheese:

I’m starting to feel Lucky The Bots ran interference,

Can’t make sense of this. Big Navi isn’t that close and somehow I doubt it will bridge the technological gap between AMD and nVidia. Why were they in such a rush?

I’m leery of reporting on reporting. I’m sure there are problems…but a lot of these YouTubers are reporting on reporting.

Rightfully so.

And the originator, Igor the german guy, is talking about having discussed this with other undisclosed people. He does seem very convincing, but only talks about measurements and experiences. Never shows proof of any kind except the board layout.

There‘s always the hunt for the next Whatever-Gate. Not being the early adopter helps me a lot with keeping sane.

Nvidia partners used cheap capacitors and they can’t take the increased power draw the FE boards are fine.

Well…
Sure, it hasn’t been a very good launch considering the limited numbers of cards in the first batch and the whole shop-bot scalpers phenomenon.
But when it comes to the filter problems, it seems like Nvidias own cards work just fine.
The question is; did Nvidia send erroneous hardware information to the AIB manufacturers, or did the AIB manufacturers themselves cheap out on the filters?
From the reports it seems that the AIB cards with the cheap filters encounter problems in boost clock speeds, but are stable below that.
I have no idea about who’s to blame here. Did Nvidia give out wrong info or did the AIBs misinterpret that info? Not every AIB manufacturer has these problems…

I hope the bots get stuck with the cards. This is the worst ever. It was bad that the cards were only 25 percent better and not the claimed 100% better. Then it was bad that the cards are selling for nowhere near the price they advertised. Look on Ebay. 3080’s are going for almost 2k USD. Now we find out the cards are defective? This sucks.
