I haven’t looked much at this but I’d assume they’re NOT passing them off as new, right? Bet I’m wrong on that. And…

Their engine analogy: is that accurate? I’m far from an expert but in an infernal combustion engine there are physical parts, all moving around under torque, etc. Electronics either, and this a broad statement, work or they don’t. Just curious.

A lot of electronic components degrade over time and with usage. Especially in warm environments. It depends a lot on the quality of the components and materials and how the cards have been used.
I would only buy a mining GPU if it was dirt cheap.

Mean time between failure applies to electronics as much as to mechanical systems. A card that’s been running 24/7 at max, may be just that much closer to failure/end of life.

And remember, we’re talking about cards that are going for double or even triple the normal asking price…

Yeah, that’s “Just Not Right”

Mining itself doesn’t put that much stress on a single card, but in a typical rig with multiple cards, I can see that heat is a potential problem. Heat stress from inadequate cooling probably puts more stress than the actual mining, which is not anywhere near what VR does.

But of course, you are not in VR for months at a time, 24/7…

If the cards were going for standard MSRP, I would be a bit more sanguine, but at two and three times that, for cards with an unknown history and expected lifetime… Not that interested.

Ha! Don’t forget to blink. I drove a rally straight through in Dirt Rally 2 in VR once and had severe dry eyes the next couple of days. After that, I’m very conscious of blinking during VR sessions.

How long VR sessions do you guys normally do?

I can do 1hr or 1h30 max.

Four hours is about my max, but I more usually keep it to 30 to 60 minute stints.

Usually 0:30-1:30, but that’s because of mission capability, not VR capability…

1.5 hours +/-
That’s about how long my typical mission playtime lasts.

Same with me. Getting shot down in VR is always a bit stunning and for me doesn’t take too long.

Curious if any of you do room or stand-up VR as well? How many of you have played Half-Life Alyx for example?

I played Robo Recall from Start to finish when I got my rift and had a weird Neo style moment when I tried to walk in the real world.

Yeah it’s weird with simmers and VR. It’s like buying a car and then only ever using it to drive to the airport

It’s funny that VR is such a niche and then there’s us that just use it to sit in a cockpit that then makes it an even smaller niche. It’s a fine and all, just find it interesting. Alyx VR was probably the best game in the last couple of years, it’s just not played a lot.
