Racing sim hardware

Finally got my v-rig, was ordered back in June, but due to production capacity problems they only delivered it short of Christmas. Took a couple of days to assemble, it’s an all metal construction. I’m not exactly a handyman, so it took quite some effort and help to get it to this state:

Samsung Odyseey G7 32" barely fits on the steering mount display bracket. Fanatec DD2 wheel base has some more room, if I’d lower the adjustable steering mount plate down.

The cables are hidden behind the monitor. Heusinkveld sprint pedals are mounted, a tad bit high for my taste, but then I come from office chair racing

Seat and display, display is close enough so I don’t need glasses

Now, do I need to adjust my body to the new rig or do I adjust the rig to my office chair position…

I wonder what the big red button does

The big red button is the kill-switch for turning off the wheelbase. The DD2 Fanatec provides up to 25nm according to their website, and if starts running amok, the kill-switch might be handy :joy:
I run it in low torque mode right now, but will probably try out the ‘manly’ mode later. For table mounted DD2 high torque mode is kind of not recommended, so I never bothered with it so far.

Congratulations! It looks great.

I would say that You should adjust the rig to your body, so that You can use it for long sessions without any discomforts.

I’ve been looking for another racing steering wheel since my Fanatec gave way. It was the cheapest model about 10 years ago that they sold for 150 euro’s. The wheel was good but the pedals terrible, I got a different set of pedals(I think CSR?) to put on it but those also gave way.

Are second had G27’s worth it? Or the G920 new any good? Thrustmaster T150 looks like a popular option but second hand barely any cheaper then new.

Anything specific I should be looking out for? It’s been a long long time but that driving itch is back!

The G27 is an excellent entry level wheel and pedal combo. Well made and there are a ton of mods for them, if that’s your thing. Most cockpits have mounting holes for them and they are supported by virtually every driving sim. The G25, G27, and G29 are probably the best bang for the buck in the sub $500 category.

But like most entry level wheels, they are gear driven, with relatively low powered motors. They suffer from having a little slop in the center and are not as smooth as belt driven or direct drive wheels.

Fanatec has greatly improved their design and build quality since your original purchase and probably have the widest range of drive simulation hardware of any manufacturer. I’m extremely happy with my Fanatec gear, and wouldn’t hesitate to buy from them again.

Still, the wheel doesn’t make the driver, and you can have a bunch of fun with a Logitech while saving some bucks for DCS modules.

G29 user here, because I have a PC and a PS4. Great entry level wheel.

I have used a G27 for many years but are retirering the wheel at this time and are waiting for my ordered replacement G29. The G27 intermittently keeps on disconnecting and reconnecting so I felt it was time for a replacement.

Also the most current drivers for the G27 is from 30/3-2010, so they are a little long in the teeth I would say.
The last version of the Logitech Gaming Software that works with the G29 are from 08/10-2018.
The last version of the Logitech G Hub Software for the G29 are from 20/11-2020 (From what I have read up on until now, it seems that it is not very good, but I will dig some more into that. It may have changed.) Heck, I have only been looking very little at the G29 specs in the last week, so there is still more to learn.

I will use the G27 shifter with the Leo Bodnar Shifter Adapter for Logitech G25, G27, G29, G920 as that supports all of the buttons on the shifter.
If the G27 shifter is plugged into the G29 wheel you only get access to the 6 gears and reverse as the rest of the functions are on the G29 wheel instead.

At first I will attempt to use the G27 pedals with the G29 as I am very happy with the modded feel I have with them. If it sucks I have the Leo Bodnar adapter for those as well.
The first mods I have ever made to PC controllers was swapping the G27 pedal springs around, so the Brakes are stiffest, the clutch is softer and the speeder is softest. Then I reverse mounted them, (I like the feel of them very much more like that.)

Early iteration. Very claustrophobic March 2013 Note the Wheel at rest holder. It sits much higher on the same wall today. (See the second to last picture.)

Middling iteration

Current version

For the Shifter I have made a very easy sequential shifter mod with 2 longer screws holding 2 rubber bands in front and behind the shift lever. Later on I did a DIY Handbrake mod with 2 wires coming from the shifter and have also cut of part of the side of the shifter, to make room for my thighs.

The spirng was so tight that I had to weigh down the Shifter/Handbrake assembly with the fireextinguisher

Another handbrake iteration
A softer spring for another brake repairset

I have adjusted the modifications over time and are very happy with what I have now.

There are a lot of possible mods for the G25, G27 and G29 steering sets and a boatload of “how to” videos on Youtube. The great part is that it at least to me, it is very easy to do a lot of the mods on the G25, G27 and G29 pedals and also fairly easy to do mods to the G25 and G27 Shifter.

My wheel at rest

I was considering getting a ThrustMaster TMX, but you only have the clamp with 1 screw to mount it and I feel that, that is to little. I wouldn’t trust it on my wall mount and there is not room for it either.

The great advantage with the Logitech G family of devices is that both Wheels and shifters have both clamps and direct mount holes with metal thread inserts in them. The direct mount holes is directly in the pedal assemblies, so you can actually discard all of the plastic housing and mount them wherever you want.

I hope that this can serve as some inspiration. There are a lot of possibilities.

Great set up!! But throttle on the left and clutch on the right? That would confuse the heck out of me!

Although I drove a Foden lorry in my youth that had 21 gears. No synchromesh and the clutch in the middle. That was a complete nightmare in traffic. Driving that round London with 60 tonnes pushing me along from behind was my Vietnam.
So I suppose its what you get used too

TeTeT, I had never heard of V-Rig before, but it looks really nice with all of the adjustability. I have a Sparco seat slider for my rig that desperately needs installing.

Thank you very much.

HeHeHe!
Well, it is from left: clutch, brakes and speeder.

After some Richard Burns Rally I found that I prefered it this way. Actually I looked into getting a third spacer and footrest, so that all 3 would be the same, but found it to expensive at the time.

When the G29 arrives I will swap out the clutch footrest and spacer so all 3 are the same.

A triple 65" screen rig.

LOL, I love this comment, “I think you should add passenger seats so you can take your family on holiday.”

Incredible rig! It would make a great cockpit setup too! This guy was spot on in everything he had to say about large 4K monitors, especially the benefits of having them set up to mimick a 1:1 real life FOV.

He’s gone WAY overkill on the 144Hz gsync monitors though, but then again, they ($10,000 worth) were donated by the manufacturers.

He said he’s only able to get around 60 fps with reduced graphics settings in Assetto Corsa so I think three decent 4K TVs ($2000 worth) would look exactly the same.

I’ve been thinking about getting back into sim racing and investing in new hardware. My good old G25 is no longer state-of-the-art but the prices of the DD steering wheels have deterred me so far.
Now Fanatec brings out a dd driven steering wheel from 350€ ( CSL DD ). What do you think of it?

Oh…! I want it! I also want to be able to mount it in my SimBox.

I wonder if I can make my old Logitech MOMO wheel work with that…?

Looks doable!

The main problem will be the extra set of pedals if you want to integrate it into the rig. I’m still looking for a solution for that.

I’ve been trying to pre-order one, but they are sold out immediately after the alert email is received.

RIP my old G27 wheel! She just got totally obsoleted when I tried it yesterday. Completely unrecognized device by Windows 10 standards. I don’t want to try any more fixes people. I even upgraded to Windows 11 to see if I could get it to work.

I picked up a G29 with stick shifter today but who knows how long that will be relevant since it was released in 2015 LOL!

G29’s a really nice wheel. I’m still going to use the pedals that came with my G27 though since I have a nice Bodnar cable for it and they are really nice pedals … the only piece of historic racing kit that is still relevant! Geriatrics rule!
