Got my new Predator mount desk-pit setup over the weekend. I’m still tweaking some things here and there but its mostly finished. Initially I was going to build my rig around Monstertech but suffered from some moderate sticker shock when considering the shipping fees from the EU. If you’re in the USA take a look at Predator. High quality product and excellent customer service. I was using J-Pein mounts previously and I consider the Predator mounts a significant upgrade.
I already had the Honeycomb Alpha for a while now and today I saw the Honeycomb Bravo at a local computer store for a nice price so I couldn’t resist!
It fit right onto my “sim desk” that I built around 30 years ago with the undermounted keyboard and mouse trays that I got at an office sale for like $10 …
I must say the Bravo is a beautiful piece of kit for a reasonable price. Haven’t even got any of the handle caps off yet.
One of my cockpits.
On the table: Matrox Millenium G400 32MB AGP and ATI Radeon 9000 Pro 64MB AGP
Mastering in manual refueling
Nowadays, there is my original socket 754 AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (Venice) overlocked 2@2,4Ghz and ATI HD 3850 512MB GDDR3 AGP 8x
What is the most important here is fact that on Windows XP SP3 x86 you can run without any troubles almost all flight simulators from the nineties including music in DID F-22 ADF/TAW which normally crash immediatelly to desktop if music is enbled in config.
My Falcon BMS 4.35 cockpit in 2021 when we had a meeting with our 43rd Black Adders (Czechoslovak) virtual squadron.
HW: Intel Core i5-2400 all cores@3,8Ghz (in those time was possible to overlock i5 without K overlocked edition), MB Gigabyte with Intel P67 chipset, Nvidia GT 1030 2GB GDDR5 (EVGA), 12GB DDR3 1600 Mhz, Sound Blaster X-Fi with my one Track IR 4 PRO (support 6 DOF) which I have more then 15+ years and which survived rampage of all ours childern and still works well.
27" 4K AOC 10 bit native color monitor. I was surrpised how good Falcon BMS 4.35 is optimized. Even with GT 1030 I was able to run Falcon BMS smoothly in 4k or QHD resolution with more then 30 fps in dynamic campaign. Impressive performance with DirectX 11 engine!
You’re running a 27" monitor in 4K? Do yourself a favor and run it on a 55" panel! Then again, you’ll need three LAN party spots by the look of things LOL!
Well, monitor is primary dedicated for my wife when she is on home office. You are right 4K on 27" isn’t the best for playing demand modern games (probably I should to choose native QHD), especially not on too much performance GT 1030. Fortunately Falcon BMS looks good in QHD resolution as well.
I would prefer to have in ideal scenaro 3 x 32" QHD LCDs but problem is space on desk and aditionally I guess that you need to have a really powerfull GPU to serving all those screens.
I will test Falcon BMS 4.36 on it soon, hopefully performance will be still +/- same.
I like my big 55" panel. what I dont like is performance in 4k. it could be not a big deal in older sims like F4, but for more modern sims I am afraid that RTX2070/3070 is on the edge of its capabilities to run sims smooth in 4k.
oc the term ‘smooth’ is subjective. for me 60FPS is smooth for civi GA flying. 90FPS+ is requirement for me for civi helo ops and any combat ops.
wondering if latency of the panel can play significant role in this. its TV and not a dedicated monitor. so there is that.
Latency has never been a problem for me for the past five or so years I’ve been running large panels (what I used to call TV’s). Probably all Smart TV’s have a game mode these days. It’s just been a joy running these things and I’m always amused when a monitor manufacturer comes out with their latest and greatest high tech 27" monitor LOL! No thanks.
4K can be a problem though if you don’t have the right vid card. You kinda need the same horsepower to run 4K as you do VR … probably more. With that said, I’m pretty happy with my 3080 running everything I throw at it at 60 FPS but things could be better which is why I’m targeting the 4080 or similar AMD tech down the line …
What do you mean? Are there stutters? Are you limited in graphics settings? Or are your panels higher framerate?
best would be 55" panel in 4k with all settings maxed, or the equivalent in VR but I similarly think thats not possible with todays titles even with 3080. talking here 60FPS +. my panel sure has game mode and variable refresh rate but still didnt find my sweet spot with my 3070 mobile (similar performance in MSFS as my former 2070S desktop).
going with better GPU will results in the same situation after a while imo … as the devs will rise the bar again and again.
good old performance chase.
back to old sims it is … now where is my IL2 1946 install disc again
or maybe its just me and my inability to set the things properly … cant decide if variable refresh rate provides better results or it is vsync etc.
What @Nevo says. I start with graphics settings maxed out and then I have to dial a few problematic options down like Ambient Occlusion and Anti Aliasing to get my frames back up to 60fps. It doesn’t take much though and I’m still left with a beautiful big and smooth picture.
Does anti-aliasing add anything at 4K?
Oh… not at 27" but at 55" it probably does
That’s what I always thought but ya, at 55" 4K you’re basically running four 27" 1920*1080 monitors. They have a new tech out now called DLSS but I find it makes my image a little blurrier than running pure Anti-aliasing.
in regards to AA I think sweet spot for 4k could be 43/48" panel. agree that 55" is little bit ‘stretching’ that res.
I think I did stop dreaming about 6k / 8k panels long time ago
It’s all about Field of View for me. True to life 1:1 FOV. I actually went from a 60" to a 55" because we decided to use the 60" in our family room.
55" is acceptable though. Anything less doesn’t turn me on.
Here’s a great FOV calculator …

For another data point, at 40” 4K UHD I still like 2x AA when I can afford the graphics hit. Otherwise you still see jaggies on the horizon which is annoying.
