Get well soon!
Hope you’re all healthy soon!
Hope you and the family recover quickly @Troll
Thanks for the well wishes!
I have three doses of vaccine and I guess this is the omicron variant, based on the speed in which it contaminated almost an entire school. Symptoms are so far mild.
Best wishes for for a swift recovery for you and your family @Troll.

Good to hear about mild symptoms Troll. ![]()
The school nurse called Monday, said that one of our daughters had been in contact with a positive, but if I could send a copy of her vaccination record, that they would let her out of quarantine. Of course her two vaccines were prior to Omicron, so wouldn’t prevent infection from the dominant variant. It would help prevent severe symptoms. I scanned and sent the card to get her out of jail free. Our daughter never developed symptoms. As far as the school is concerned, they are following school board protocol, which is said to follow that of the CDC.
Everyone in the household has been max vaccinated C19 and flu. 3 of us at different times, have felt bad (like you had a really bad hangover), but by 24 hours later, back to being chipper again. No one has missed school or a day of work. I’ve ordered home test kits, but they haven’t arrived yet. Like Omicron, I feel like by the time they arrive, it will be behind us. Who knows if it’s C19 or the flu or a common cold. But we’ve had minimal impact, better than pre-COVID years in fact, probably because the kids are wearing masks at school and on the bus and parents for the most part are working remotely. I go to a face-to-face meeting about once every other week. A positive effect perhaps?
No vaccine will protect you from infection completely. But as you say, the immune system is conditioned to deal with it before the infection spreads. Latest report from the Norwegian health organization is to just open up the society and let it spread. For vaccinated people it’s no worse than that of a common cold.
I don’t follow the scientific process enough to know how data is derived - but is there any accounting for the assumption that any further COVID strains will be blowing through a population that has already been pretty damaged by the previous strains? For lack of a better word…there are less people in that most vulnerable class (obesity and/or underlying health issues) so there will naturally not be as many people dying? I’m always wary of headlines and statistics that can be massaged in different ways according to agendas. It is also kind of interesting to see things like “Omicron 30% less lethal, but 300% more transmissible (statistic I made up)”…so even though it is milder, statistically more people are getting it and some of those will get very sick and die…so does the increase in overall cases make it more or less dangerous? See…I guess it depends on how you look it.
I took four COVID tests last week because I had a slightly scratchy throat - but all came back negative. Even though there were a large number of people around me that were testing positive.
And then it’s the natural evolution of a virus that a variant that spreads more easily, but harms the host less, will dominate.
But as you say, people who got other variants will be at least partly inocculated. Same for people who got the vaccine, even if it targeted an earlier variant. The report by the Norwegian Health Organization, that I alluded to earlier, is written by scientists advicing the govt. It’s not just a newspaper headline. But there sure are enough of them too…
If you only read headlines, you will see what they want you to see.
You tend to need to dive into the data yourself.
For example, dying with COVID is not the same as dying of COVID. Yet some people will make it seem like the two are the same. At the same time, would whatever else it is have killed them had they not had COVID, or was it the fact that they had multiple simultaneous ailments the cause? In which case if they had NOT caught COVID they might have lived longer or pulled through? Again, very hard to state for sure.
One thing to remember is it is a myth that viruses evolve to be less deadly. They will evolve to be more contagious, but to be less deadly is immaterial as long as they are easily transmissible. They don’t have a brain, they’re not even animals, they just do what they do. While it seems anecdotally that they do, actual studies have shown they can become less, more, or equally harmful with time.
Delta was worse than the original wave, it was both deadlier and more transmissible. Omicron is even more transmissible but less deadly at the same time. The next one could be more deadly than delta and even more transmissible than omicron, the issue is to get the spread to stop before such a variant evolves.
Well, it’s all about what mutation will become dominant. Typically a more deadly mutation will kill off more hosts, and because of this be less successful in contaminating a new host. Live hosts are more efficient vehicles.
While that is statistically true, evolution is not a linear process.
My sister was triply vaccinated, and is now on her second day in the hospital after her blood oxygen reached 89.
Or in other words, no guarantees with this.
The women in the bed next to her is dying, and my sister spent some uncomfortable time listening to a priest giving the lady her last rites… ![]()
How horrible. I cannot imagine. I wish your sister well a speedy recovery.
Hope she has a speedy recovery! That’s got to be a difficult experience to go through.
No it is not.
Well, no.
I was just paraphrasing from the Norwegian report, where the omikron variant is dominant. I don’t know if that’s the case where you are?
I wish your sister a speedy recovery!
It’s 03:30 over here… Went to bed at 20:00, woke up an hour ago. Fever, sweaty, coughing and a stuffy nose.
Hoping you get well soonest, also!
tested+ for CV and Flu at the same time about 2 weeks ago,
after 3 Shots, still got it, and still had severe symptoms,
But the only positive, I’m down 2 pant sizes,
As for CV wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.
Fliss and I have the same symptoms
