Star Wars Squadrons

It is really funny but my brain takes, like, two minutes to adjust.
I have played so many space sims and flight sims that it became easy to switch.

How to edit Controls in Star Wars Squadrons.

On the main screen, hit the Options button or the Escape key.

Hit the CONTROLS button or hover the pointer above it and hit the Space key.

Scroll down to the FLIGHT STICK section. (You can also do this with the Arrow Up and Down Keys.

Rearrange the devices to your liking clicking the arrows or using the Arrow Left and Right keys. (It may take a while as it is currently is not possible to lock any of them. It is like a little puzzle to get the right lineup.)

When you are done scroll back up and hit the Change button in the Remap Controls field.

Hit the Change button for the section you wish to remap your controls for.

Either click the controller type on top or use the Q or E key to chose.
Pick the function You want to assign by clicking it or hit Enter.

When You are done hit Back or the Escape key and then hit Save & Exit or the Space key.

Once You have setup each section to Your liking hit Back/Escape.

You are now back in the main Controls section, where you can change different controls settings.
I would recommend that You play around with this as You gain experience with the game.

Hit Back/Escape until You are back on the Main screen again.

You are now ready to play. Good luck and may The Schwarts be with You.

Happy Simming

I don’t recall logging with an EA account, got it through steam.

Thank you!!
I was pretty lost.

Last question for now. How do I get it out of theater mode? When I was doing a practice run, it was like viewing in a movie theater.

It sound like you’re not in VR mode? The article here has some specific steps for enabling VR per platform towards the bottom, so hope that helps:

https://help.ea.com/en-ca/help/star-wars-squadrons/star-wars-squadrons/star-wars-squadrons-tech-briefing/

(the short version is there is an ‘Options / VR toggle’ to activate it).

Thank you. I’ll ensure I’m in that setting as well.
Yeah, I’m getting the vibe that EA did not truly have the PC VR gamer in mind with this. Console VR for sure.

For cut-scenes and the like it uses a movie theatre, I think the main VR view is just when you’re in the cockpit. It has some rough edges but it’s a nice game.

In the cockpit, yes. But also in the hangars and the briefing room. I am playing through the Story again and now see that I missed much the first time through. When talking to a NPC it’s really worth taking in the whole environment. A LOT went into making Squadrons a visual experience. Spoiler Alert: I think Wedge wears a hairpiece.

I started the game for the first time yesterday. It really is a nice looking game while providing high fps on my two years old PC.

Controller setup was ok (I still don’t get why most games don’t allow to press a joystick button to see what it is mapped to à la Classis IL-2 or DCS). To be honest I didn’t expect so many controls. Still have to find out what really needs to be mapped to the HOTAS.

The atmosphere in the first two introduction missions was promising. There are some new concepts I need to get used to: e.g. Inflight repair in a TIE Fighter?

The game mechanics for the customization of fighter components also seems to add a nice touch to tailor your ride to your preferences. This should make online play more versatile. I’m still not a big fan of the whole unlocking mechanics, but I guess that’s the current flavor in game design.

A lot of love went into this game and devs seem to listen to their community (i.e. Track IR implementation, improvements in game controller integration). I’m glad I waited some patches to get a good initial impression.

A theme with me over the last year or two has been to try to accept things as they are and not suffer any frustration in trying to improve them. (It’s a bit of an affection and I’ll probably take it to my grave.) So in that spirit I hooked up my Xbox controller when I purchased squadrons. I think its a fun way to play the game. It might even be better since the mechanics clearly favor a quick twitch over a precise aim. Playing with Y, B, X and A, especially in VR, isn’t as intuitive as with a HOTAS. So by introducing some capabilities later in the game they ensure that the player is building on a good foundation of muscle memory. Being old, I didn’t properly take it all in the first time through.

While the unlocks allow you to tailor your fighter to your preferences, thanks to the tradeoffs involved, such that there is no clearly better or worse option, I find them unnecessary to play the game. You can easily complete the entire campaign and play the fleet battles forever with only the defaults and you won’t be in a materially worse position than if you unlocked everything and swapped each and every component.

So if you don’t want to, you really don’t have to. The old X Wing games didn’t allow that, at most you might have had some choices about secondary weapons, but that was it and they were fine.

So my youngest brother gifted me a copy of this for Christmas, and has it himself on XBox. I’ve read that cross-platform play is a thing, but has anybody given it a shot yet? I’m hoping to teach him a few things soon in MP.

How to DLAB like a pro :stuck_out_tongue:

I think it’s done with using the ‘Add Friend’ with the EA ID thingy. I’ve played with Xboxen people and it worked ok.

Yes. Yes it is.

It’s an arcade Star Wars flight combat game.

If you like Star Wars and not expecting real world physics or ‘DCS X-Wing’ then it’s good fun. The multiplayer can be a bit brutal until you figure out what sort of role you want to play (like any MP game where people get really into it) but the single player story is quite nice and fun to go through. If you don’t really like Star Wars or expect a strict sim then it might not be fun. Graphics are great on most specs and it’s good popcorn fun

Next question. Is there any reason my mouse doesn’t seem to be working on the menu screens? This is making setting up an account (because apparently you do need an EA account) rather annoying.

Not seen that so this might not help, but does mashing the ESC key help? It seems to detect the input profile with a big delay, so if you have a HOTAS or a controller it’ll hang on to that for too long - at least in the menus. Hitting ESC reminds it to go look at keyboard/mouse inputs.

Not so far- I’m two-fisting the mouse and a tracball simultaneously to select boxes at the moment.

On an unrelated note, apparently there’s already a Navynuke99 on EA. This angers me.

I’d never use my Warthog HOTAS for SWS … too heavy and stiff. That’s why I use an old X52 HOTAS with a loose action (spring). With that setup you can quick twitch your stick all over the place!
