The Essential Books Thread

Well written I thought and very engaging - basically the story post Pearl Harbour of never ending Allied disasters as the Japanese swept through the Pacific…of which I knew nothing about.

I flew TC a couple of times when I was flying charter. Interesting, very sharp guy, but slightly aloof and he struck me a little ‘odd’.

I am reading a 3 book set called Future War Box Set by F X Holden.

It is based in the 2030-2040 years. A lot of drone action, AI in aircraft and ships, interesting scenarios. Book 3 brings in kinetic energy weapons launched from space. Yikes!

That looks really good. Think I might have to pick that up myself.

Flying the Battle of France campaign in Cliffs of Dover has made me want to revisit that period of French history, and you can’t revisit that time and place without of course crossing paths with Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

This is free on Kindle- looking forward to diving into it.

I just bought my son Jonathan Livingston Seagull to give him to read. The one without the crappy extra ending that was tacked on at some point…

There is debate about that. His plane was found in 2003, though only small portions were recovered.

It is thought that an unidentifiable body that was recovered off Marseille a few days after his disappearance may have been St. Exupéry, but it’s never been confirmed.

Thanks for that . Somehow great writers/artists lost to war saddens me all the more . Something about losing their potential to further enrich our lives i guess…

Agreed. Scientists haven’t been immune either- the story of Henry Moseley is also incredibly tragic for the massive loss to the field:

Thanks for the heads up!

That Topgun book is a great read! Written by the officer who founded the Topgun school at Miramar.

Thanks for the tip!

For those who might be interested in a modern, post-USSR “Red Storm Rising”, a former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe wrote “War With Russia”.
Certainly not as thrilling as RDS but still interesting given the author’s background.

Full Throttle was a nice read, a collection of 33 stories covering the air war above Vietnam.
F-4, F-105, A-4, UH-1, A-1, O-1, etc they’re all in there. Really enjoyed that one.

I’m currently reading Bob Woodward’s “Veil”, probably has to be taken with a grain of salt but it provides a very interesting insight into the US intelligence services during the 80’s

This is the same guy who wrote No Easy Day isn’t it? How is this different?

Different guy from what I can tell.

Different authors, about the same event.
