2004 Most F-14 Sqns Converted to Super Hornets and VFA.
Maverick Likely Stayed on until a few years after that point, as he already had F/A-18E/F Experience.
After a while he retired/went to do test flights as a civilian, as his flight suit in Darkstar has no Military Insignia just the Program patch,
Then being brought back to active Duty as Capt. to be an instructor for the students in the plot line.
I don’t know why there’s so much confusion about that.

I don’t know. If the USN says it’s possible, I’ll take their word for it.
But the bottom line is that I actually don’t care… I’ll take “cuz the script says so” as an explanation to almost any question regarding the plot.
All I want and expect, is entertainment.

When I was a green King Air co-pilot I flew with a retired F16 pilot. We called him Col. Mike. He was flying combat missions over the Balkans at age 50. He told me he had passed up promotion from full bird Colonel more than once so he could stay in the cockpit. His Career path was interesting, starting in the late 60’s as a Marine Corps F4 pilot, then to the airlines for a couple of years (hated it) then to the Air Force National Guard flying F100’s, A7’s and finally the F16. He was sharp as a tack and I learned a lot from him.
One of the things he helped me with was thinking about my position in 3D space in relation to the airport, specifically at night at an uncontrolled airport. He fixed that by not letting me turn on the runway lights (Pilot Controlled Lighting) until I was on final. If, when he finally allowed me to turn the lights on, the PAPI’s showed two red, two white, I had done well. If not, then I heard all about it. Once I got the hang of it though, it was Iike a light bulb had switched on and I never struggled with it again. Of course, he could have just told me that you just need 300ft per nautical mile from the touchdown zone and it would have been a lot easier, but I think he was having too much fun

FWIW, small market domicile, Charleston, South Carolina, my opening night ticket is the 27th.

USA National release Date is the 27th,
Some Areas are doing Early Screenings,
Make sure it’s also not for “Top Gun” 1986, some theatres are showing the 1986 the week before Maverick is released.
on the 27th it will only be in Theatres (no Side by side Streaming Launch),
We got a Private Screening here almost 2 weeks ago.

Dear Tom,
I hate to be that guy, but…and I will watch it, some day…but if TG2 is standard Hollywood (like the first one) then I suspect there will be only about 10 minutes of good flight film-age. The US Navy cruise videos (and some USAF, though they need to get crackin on this) give me that 10 minutes. And often more. With real live hero’s!
I’ll be carefully observing reviews, discretely, from high above Nellis, Syria, and the PG through my LANTIRN pod, in my own virtual Hornet. And in full 3D!

@jross I’m not expecting it to be authentic. I do expect to hit the craft beer pub down the street for a pint or two on the way to the theater, buy popcorn, and enjoy the hell out of it as a shameless guilty pleasure, laughing at the outrageous and implausible. I’ll check my rational self at the theater door and eagerly consume the pulp fighter pilot fiction, saving analysis for weeks or months later. Call me shallow.
