Tropical Storm / Hurricane Florence / update Michael

Yeah, they are definitely in the weather/infotainment business now. I can rarely blame someone for wanting to make money in pursuing what they want to do…but I do have reservations about making something like weather an always dramatic event. Weather, like many natural phenomenons, is dramatic enough. It really doesn’t need embellishment. Show a flood, an avalanche, a massive hail storm - it speaks for itself.

Earlier this year I happened to catch the Weather Underground on an FBO TV and I almost puked in my mouth a little when I saw their fake “den and bar” weather set where the two hosts were standing behind a bar like they were in some guys den dishing weather guidance. It was embarrassing for all involved - the cast, the crew, and viewer alike.

I really miss the old predictable days of the original format Weather Channel with the Local on the 8s, looping radar images, and the Tropical Update at ten to the hour each hour.

TWC’s attempt to rekindle “Wayne’s World”. It might work if they used real beer and had chugging contests during commercial breaks.

That said, I do like the Weather Underground daily email update - quick and easy…especially the part that says “pretty much like yesterday”…of course, that was when I was only a virtual pilot and could change the weather with a push of a button. Now that I am an official “yachtsman” I find myself getting serious about the weather.

Jib is the big sail thing on the front. Jibe is when you duck.

Alas, only DC when underway. But if @Navynuke99 can use a drink shaker, we should be OK.

12V blender. I’m a problem solver.

Jab is what you do to the captain when he jibes the jib without warning when you are on the foredeck.

My brother had to work tomorrow. He’s on the road back to Myrtle Beach and we are nervously watching his progress on the moving map. The rivers are flooding and the traffic is really bad. Highway 501 is closed due to flooding and the side road he was on was starting to have water come over it. All he has left to get across is the Little Pee Dee river west of Conway and he should be home free. He said it has been very stressful though because it is raining very hard still and the water is creeping up on the roads.

Thanks for the update Beach. Wishing your brother safe travels. I’ve been following the Pawleys Island PD twitter feed, and based on what they are reporting, it should be getting better the further east he travels. Pawleys is 23 miles south of the 501/17 intersection.

Yeah, we’ve gotten quite a bit of rain here in the western outskirts of Charlotte. I’ve had to pump out probably 8 or so inches of water out of the pool to keep it from…cough…cresting…LOL. My beer cooler has taken a hit…I think I have four or five left bobbing around in there.

All those rivers east of I-95 are going to be in big trouble over the next few days. All this water up here is going to be heading that way, and they are already underwater. I wouldn’t be surprised if the flooding is historic down there.

Dr. Girlfriend works at East Carolina in Greenville, and they’re closed until at least Wednesday - everybody is nervously watching the Tar River to see what it does- memories of Matthew and Floyd are fresh in people’s minds.

UNCW in Wilmington is closed until further notice, as is my company’s HQ down there, as the Cape Fear is still swelling.

Pitt-Greenville airport took a beating back in Floyd. I still remember the photos of the runways and ramp covered with water and planes sitting in water…

The Cape Fear south of Fayetteville is on a trend toward major flooding…

I don’t see any river gauges on the Tar River unfortunately…but if it’s anything like the Nuese, it is gonna be ugly…

I believe they said they were expecting it to hit at least 24’, or at least they were predicting that a few days ago. Word of the day around here seems to be tornado, a few on the ground over the past several days and several warnings already this morning

Durham had an alert this morning, as did Murrells Inlet in South Carolina last night.

yeah, could actually hear that cell moving to the north west of the my house a little later on. Clouds are shifting a bit overhead now and just sort of has that feeling, could be a long day

Those concerned about coastal flooding might find this map interesting.

Looks like MED-1 is setting up in Burgaw, NC just north of Wilmington…

Just talked to a few coworkers. We’re trying to organize a supply run for folks we know who are sheltering people out on the coast this week, and are trying to see if we can probe for a clear route into Wilmington/ Southport. If you hear of anything opening up, let me know?
