Varjo Aero VR headset

They don’t have much of a track record when it comes to sales… I think this sale was a response to the release of the Crystal.
I’ll keep a lookout.
VR Flight Sim Guy have had some codes, in the past, too.

I’m going to do a wait and see what develops I think. I dusted off my Valve Index and cranked it up to 120hz now that I have an RTX 4080 and it’s actually pretty good, much nicer than at 80hz. The cost of the aero atm is rather too high now that the Pimax Crystal is coming. I should wait and see what actual users say about it in the months ahead.

That’s a wise decision, I think.

Don’t forget the growing rumours that Valve are on the cusp of something with their next headset, too. According to fansites they’ve been hiring VR specialists again lately.
Could still be early days, but still worth bearing in mind. Whatever comes, I doubt it will be cheap - that doesn’t seem to be how Valve does things.
As long as they do it right, I’ll be interested.

A good point @Johnny. With my Index looking quite good now I can run it at 120hz I might just wait to see what Valve does. No rush.

One is happening right now. Get base stations for free:

“Midsummer special: Get 2 base stations free of charge with Varjo Aero, use code BASE2 at checkout”

That’s a nice deal, if you don’t have base stations already, of course.

Thanks for the heads up but I already have base stations with my Valve Index. However, it tells me they are looking for ways to offer value.

Last week I got a slightly used Varjo Aero headset as well. Since then I’m experiencing a new world with DCS and FS2020. Racing to be tested later

With help of @Freak in the mudspike discord I overcame some blurry instruments in the P-47 at start. Now I changed to Varjo OpenXR for the rendering (?) and went with the 37 PPD Very High Resolution quality setting for the Aero and mbucchia’s Varjo Foveated mod. However, the fences and buildings were shimmering quite a bit. After some googling I now turned off Terrain Objects Shadows and increased MSAA 4x, that seems to fix most of it.

The DCS performance counters inform me that I now roughly keep the 90 fps, though it seems when some terrain objects are loaded it’s reduced to eighty-something. The limiting factor according to the built-in tool is CPU and rendering thread. The rig is an i9 13900KF with a MSI 4080 Suprim X card.

Useful links that I encountered so far, besides this thread here on mudspike:

For completeness my current DCS graphics options and Aero settings:

You got it! Nice!

I’ve been out of the loop for a while, but try to keep up with the Varjo Discord Channel where mbucchia is posting a lot about his exploits.
Summer means less play and more work outside, vacation and family time, so I may be talking out of my behind since I haven’t tried the last few DCS updates
But from what I recall, clouds at ultra and MSAA x4 tanks performance and doesn’t give me that much better view. But, as always, YMMV.

Thanks for the advice! I reduced MSAA to 2x and enabled MFAA in Nvidia Control Panel. I set the clouds to standard. Graphically I don’t really see any difference dashing around at 100 feet over Cyprus in the UH-1H … The performance meter informs me that now I have those 90 fps most of the time. I’ll have to try it with some AI flying around as well eventually.

Have you tried Vertical Synch 45 fixed with motion smoothing, in Varjo Base?
Tried messing with the settings in foveated rendering any?

Thanks, tried that and did a short test flight in the Huey. 45 fps are doable solid in that mission at least, no matter what I do. The DCS performance meter did not complain once:

[Edit] Next is how to figure out how to map the F1…12 radio keys in VR

Thanks for your help!

Just to recap,

I would additionally need 2 base stations, right? I take it Valve Index ones (159€ each) would work.

Whole package at around 1800€ before sales tax. :face_holding_back_tears:

Yes. Same base stations as Valve or HTC. I actually have one of each.

Just ordered.
Just cancelled. (Impulse buy before realizing that base stations and hand controllers were not part of the deal.)

They really should sell packages…

Yes, that was the major put-off for me when it was released. Not only that, though _ I have been using the Index since release and only had decent tracking for the first 6 months or so - then after a particular update the controller tracking fell to bits and hasn’t recovered.
I tried two different areas in different rooms in the house - one was an otherwise empty 2x4m room with a small, covered window, and had 3 stations on the ceiling corners but it still wasn’t happy.

Now I’m back in the original room, where I could only get acceptable tracking by fitting a blackout blind to the large window in here (even venetian blinds weren’t enough). Since we had expensive new triple glazing fitted, I really don’t want to attach blind supports now.

So that is another thing to be mindful of - the controller tracking is an oft reported issue. The headset tracking has been flawless.
