Cheers mate, raising a glass to you for you birthday.
Happy birthday!! Enjoy!
Happy Birthday!
Winch rollers were seized and took a massive beating to smack the pins out.
Cleaned them all up, greased and lubricated everything and changed the circlips holding it all together. Looks a lot better and works a lot nicer.
Also changed the broken reflector that i ordered from the states
Another photo showcasing how stupidly easy this thing is to work on. No plastic covers on this bad boy
See a bolt. Bend down, there is the nut. Its great!
Started wiring up my fuel cutoff switch. It got dark before i got it figured out. Its literally just 2 connectors but routing it out from the dashboard to the fuel pump was irritating me in the dark and i banged my head twice. Time to call it a day.
Fun though. Nice making the box of bits shrink a bit.
One of the guys I knew locally who has a beautiful helmet top humvee, told me he is selling it. Has some bits i don’t “need” but is selling them dirt cheap to finance a trip. So I’ve got a nearly brand new high level exhaust, in much better condition than my current one and ANOTHER slave cable, which i am going to hack apart and put crocodile clips on the end of to link to my charger to keep the old girls batteries in tip top ready for war condition. Its less than half price for both so I’d be a fool not to stockpile them even if i dont use them. But i will use them. The exhaust will look much nicer and have less sharp bits poking at me
A functional winch might make the truck almost useful enough that you can tell yourself that it isn’t a totally impractical thing.
Big trip planned with my little door gunner
Then the general decides to blow out 3 hub seals for a treat. Not gonna pretend I’m not a little irritated but glad i checked them a couple miles from home (i was nervous with her in there so was more cautious than i would of been alone…)
So we are in the van
Confounded by a common language! Does “chuffed” mean he’s pissed that the “new” exhaust is crimped. Or does “chuffed” mean he’s stoked (thrilled) that the new exhaust is way better than his old, crimped one. Guessing the second or, why would he buy it! But I did need to think about it for a second.
Chuffed = pleased.
Its meant to be crushed at the bottom. No idea why. Its not meant to be bent and rusty though. The new one fixes that
I am adding the word to my lexicon. I like it! (And congrats!)
Would you say you’re right chuffed with the new addition to your lexicon then?
‘right chuffed’ = extra pleased
Nice use of the bluetooth speaker as well. We have the same model (except for the colour).
I’m chuffed you are doing that.
I’m properly stoked
“Proper chuffed” is the way
Plan for tomorrow.
Wheels off.
Check the oil level in the portal hubs. Low is good. High is BAD.
Take the breathers off the portals and blow them out and check for blockages that could raise the pressure in the hubs and blow the oil out the seals.
Check the diesel lift pump. The breather system for the gearbox, transfer box and axles all runs through this for some reason i can’t fathom. If the lift pump is shagged, it might be blowing diesel everywhere. This. Would. Be. Bad. I might cry if this happens… end result of this would be drain fluids in EVERYTHING. change every filter. Change lift pump.
Basically. ■■■■■■■.
Now the saving grace i have is 1 hub is leaking horrendously. The other 2 are meh…leaking. the last is completely dry. Now I’m fairly sure that if the axles are having diesel pumped into them, it would be at reasonable enough pressure to blow past the seals and visible. I started her up tonight, sat with a beer and stared. Saw not a single drip. So that is possibly good news.
Now…
My assumption is age. Its been sat for however long unused. Ive changed the oil and started driving it around and the seals have dried out and they are leaking. Its a fairly reasonable assumption. The only thing with this assumption is that the input shaft is quite a bit above the level of the oil in the hub. So they must either be reeeeeeeally bad. Or there is another issue causing it to be spat up and out from the inputs. However, that is tempered by occams razor which suggests that the lower seals would blow out as well and they dont appear to have. But probably wont know until i rip it apart.
I’m gonna work through it. It wont be anything insurmountable and I’ve half been expecting a snag like this somewhere.
Seal kits upper and lower are around £250 for the whole lot from america. Lift pump is about £75.00 from ebay (its a chevy/gm one so easily available) its a fairly interesting job working on the portal axles and unique so I’m not “dreading” it. But i will be pissed if i have to drain diesel from everywhere and flush.
Fingers crossed. Its age. Age and rubber perished.
Good news. Level is low in 3 of the hubs and the one not leaking is exactly as i left it. Im 80% confident its dry seals.
The one that is leaking worse than the others has only actually lost about 20cc total. Its clean and seems diesel free. Gonna order some seals and go for it.
Kids like the big jobs so we are changing the exhaust. For the new one.
Lara is knackered apparently
