Victork2 and his ultimate folly

You can run a bunch of power tools of the internal battery for quite a long time. Which is a niche thing to need, but useful for some. Back when the Cybertruck was announced it was an awesome new feature, Ford beat them to it by at least 3 years in the time it took to bring it to market.

Well, it has to have something I guess.

Psh, my powertools have their own batteries. Now if they’d make me an electrick truck that can haul about a ton itself, in at least two cubic metres of dry space and on the roof rack, can tow at least 3 or four metric tons of crap and do that all day, I’m interested.

The fords can run mig and tig welders.

I’m guessing it will be easier to satisfy your needs with fast charging everywhere than with a huge battery capacity. You don’t drive 800 km in one go, but you stand still to load and unload often.

With rapid chargers everywhere, making a truck that runs on electrickery and would meet your specs is a doddle. Heck even if it weighs 4000kg just double up with a pair of 250kW motors and you could probably also ‘take’ a sports car in a (short) drag race.

Because .au does not have a domestic car industry to protect we are about to be flooded by Chinese EV’s. Unless I completely misread the reports, Trucks/Utility vehicles in the Hilux, Ranger, Amorok class will be on sale here as early as 2025.

So keep an eye on Downunder, because we are about to become a petri dish for long range, large EV’s.

Hadn’t thought about the vast distances with somewhere like Australia… that would make even long range EV’s (400 miles “cough cough”) an interesting choice …then throw in the climate … how much range does running the AC cost you

My nearest Service/Gas Station is 65km away

Nearest Rapid Charger: 90km

90km is a fair distance if you are running on fumes… or should that now be “running on electrons” :joy:

My concern with that would be that the Chinese government could hit the kill switch on those vehicles in wartime. That’s a play you only make once so it would be insane. Maybe the very idea is too stupid to be worthy of a conversation. The Chinese would say it’s both stupid and racist. Is this something discussed there?

Also would be a touch concerned about the quality control on those batteries

Recently I’ve heard some serious thinkers say they don’t even need to. With how much we rely on Chinese tech, just stopping the parts and maintenance service would be enough to significantly degrade our telecom networks over a few months. And who knows what else will break when the supply stops?

Our telecom companies have outsourced all expertise except marketing and finance.

Yeah, but that is a concern with any ‘connected’ vehicle these days. Even the threat of doing so would basically kill sales IMHO.

AFAIK just about all the EV battery packs (regardless of make and model) are pretty much all made in China. But I agree, QC is a potential issue.

My experience with chinese manufacturing isn’t so much poor quality (or QC) but that it is inconsistant. For example, a friend of my parents has one of the new MG EV’s. The fit and finish is a bit rough in places but it has been reliable with zero issues.

A friend of his on the other hand. Has an identical car (even the same colour) and it has been back to the dealer for warranty repairs three times in the past twelve months.

The whole EV industry by all the manufactures is pretty inconsistent at this point. I have a buddy who’s family has owned 3-4 Tesla’s at this point with zero issues. His Rivian on the other hand pretty died overnight one random Sunday, and it was going to be 3-5 weeks before they could even get started working on it. Fit and finish on the rivian was way nicer, just got a lemon on that one apparently.

Humvee has been covered up for a couple weeks. I wanted to see if the bodged together rain cover keeps out the elements and it seems to work!

I also changed the heater heat flow selector as that had rusted solid. I now have heat. Not a lot. But about a degree more than ambient

It was lovely getting it out for an hour. I’ve been really down in the dumps the last few weeks. Its been catastrophe after catastrophe. But this was a nice thing. Well worth it and really cheered me up to see it.

I forget how much it makes me smile when i come home and see it on the driveway. Just getting it uncovered today gave me a massive boost in the head.

So ■■■■ it.

I’m gonna build a car port for it
