Awesome Explanation…Much Appreciated!!
I waited, for what felt like an eternity, to jump into VR and ended up getting a first-gen HP Reverb G2, after experiencing my son’s Rift-S (which I did like). There are some nice sets out there but I’m limited to a mid-range set like the G2. As an aside it kinda sucks that HP is getting out of the VR game because I know my headset will eventually fail.
The problem I’m having is that the market seems saturated and it is once again difficult to navigate what will suit me. It also seems that the really good sets are high-end (duh, I know…). It’s just that the mid-range offerings don’t seem on par with the G2. At least from my perspective.
Oh well, I guess I’ll cross the bridge of looking at a new headset when I come to it. Hopefully, my G2 will hold up for a long time.
I’ve seen quite a few posts by people who ditched their G2 v2 for the Pico 4. The Pico 4 is cheap - if you can get one, which shouldn’t be too hard even if you don’t live in a country where they are sold.
There aren’t that many mods/accessories imo because of the market not including the USA, but the really necessary things are available, such as prescription lenses, controller covers and straps etc.
It would be an option, depending on when you need a new headset.
It’s kind of annoying, as the VR headset makers are mostly all-in on stand-alone VR, meaning a small (and useless anchor for PC simmers) mobile phone chipset strapped to your noggin. Not only is it heavier, but most of the costs go towards it too - plus batteries, compression due to no cable etc.
It’s been a while since I looked so tempted to do a quick ‘VR in 2023 for Sims’ comparison post. I’ll put on some fancy coffee and give it a think as it’s hard to find a straight up comparison table of the offerings…
Have you seen this site?
I have and it’s great on the exact tech details but I was sort of thinking of doing something from the opinion of us PC flight or driving simmer? That ‘sit down and fly’ perspective means a lot of the features that are pros sort of turn into cons in terms of weight/price on a generic comparison.
Yeah, that would be really interesting.
Would be great to have a panel of testers that could compare the most popular headsets and talk about it. But I don’t think that’s feasible, so your approach sounds like a good middle way.
I put something here. Not sure which ones I forgot but dropped the Meta Quest Pro and the Index etc.
Thanks…
I’ve looked a bit at the PICO 4. It seems like an interesting headset. I like that it has inside-out tracking but I’m not yet sure how I feel about standalone headsets.
Being tethered does not bother me. In a strange way, the cable makes me feel like I’m hooked up to comms.
I just commented about stand-alone headsets. I’m on the fence regarding them. Actually not quite a fan.
I’m a pretty big fan of the inside out tracking of headsets like the Reverb G2 since I do take it with me on the road sometimes. So far my Gen 2 G2 has been working fine. I hadn’t used it barely at all in the past year and a half…but updated a few things and it seems to be doing OK. I’m a little behind on all the tweaks to OpenXR and specific DCS settings, but I’m slowly relearning some things.
I’d upgrade from the G2 if I found something at the right price point that offered a better sim experience. 99.9% of my VR gaming is seated sims…so I don’t have much interest in anything other than that performance…so your focusing on that is appreciated @fearlessfrog …

I put a flow chart here - VR Headset Choices for PC Sims - Autumn 2023 - #6 by fearlessfrog
It could be redone from the perspective of having to add outside tracking as well, but the cost question sort of covers that too. For the Bigscreen Beyond the light unit is a big plus, but it seems unlikely to ever be able to support eye tracking, which then makes the super higher resolutions with no foveated rendering a harder sell.
DCS has quad view rendering (needed for better foveated rendering) for the Aero working, and the other headsets can use it with this compatibility OpenXR layer - it reportedly works really well, and you can even try it with no eye tracking for a fixed foveated view (think circles, with blur on the outside). You do need to be GPU limited and running a high resolution for it to help. The Meta Quest Pro apparently works well with it, and given the upcoming Quest 3 doesn’t have eye tracking I wouldn’t be shocked to see a Meta Quest Pro 2 soon enough, that might be good for the sim market. Meta don’t want to mention it to interfere with the big Q3 Q3 launch though, so might be next year.
I would buy a replacement G2 in a heartbeat. Where I live nothing else comes close in the value for money stakes.
The fact that 99.9% of use is also seated sims and I prefer inside out tracking is just the icing on the cake.
I really don’t know what I will do to replace it so thanks heaps for all the work on Headset Choices thread… At this stage it looks like I will be selling a kidney and trying to get a Pimax Crystal or Varjo Aero, whatever was available for me?
I’m in the exact same boat with regards to the G2. Thanks for the info and formatting!
I take it this is well known by now:
makes me, well, excited I s’pose. All pinch of salt until an announcement but as long as the price isn’t too steep, this will very likely be my next VR headset.
PS - and yes I do have permission already!
Isn’t it nice when SWMBO recognises the important things in ones’ life!
I didn’t know. Will be interesting to see…
When you have your noggin wrapped in a VR headset, you’re not at the pub and she knows where you are…
,and She can Sneak Up on You and Whack You Upside The Head when The mail arrives with those boxes of PC parts from Newegg!!!
Ah….Yea….that’s it!! (As I rub the back of my head)
