VR News

I wondered about the boom, LOL What should happen is if you forget to duck, there is a loud crack followed by darkness and then stars. Vision slowly returns. Ha. Actually, on further thought, the reduced vision would not be much of a hindrance. I don’t think that I’ve ever been at the club, around sailboats, or crewed, for that matter, when there wasn’t copious amounts of alcohol.

US Only via newegg.com I think - Oculus Rift + Touch controllers, $350. Nov 24th only, plus usual rush/crush, but still, a great deal…

Rift exclusive but it looks like a very well put together mashup of FTL, Mass Effect and a Tactical Shooter:

Procedurally generated roguelike with multiplayer co-op and Permadeath? In Space? Sold.

Makes me wonder who’s watching me make coffee each morning on my Piper NV. I’m not a very exciting zoo animal to watch though.

So I thought I’d try this Oculus Tray Tool everybody is raving about…
Can’t get the bloody thing to start. It hangs on starting, please wait.
Any ideas?

Not seen that before - you got lucky!

Anything in the ‘Log’ tab or is it unresponsive? I would uninstall and try 0.80. Not sure where to get old versions from so (temporarily, I’ll remove it later) you could use this:

(removed as I don’t have default permission to redistribute)

An updated version was just released, and it worked. Must’ve been a bug

I don’t know where to post this, and its not worth starting another thread over. So I will just say how in the past year (or 2?) that VR in our games has grown so much and quickly, example sometime in the near future we will have this in VR:

DCS (now)
Il2:BoX (now)
X Plane 11
Rof (2)

That about rounds out the major flight sims

Also the il2 Tank sim will have VR I assume

My other interest is racing, in that category is pretty fleshed out with about all major titles now including VR.

Space:

Elite Dangerous
Star Citizen (planned)

FPS and Strategy games seem to be late to the game now. But I have to say, VR is looking like it is here to stay for quite some time now. Hopefully we will start seeing some real gen 2 VR coming eventually

P3D has native VR support if I am not mistaken, and with FlyInside, FSX too.
AeroFly FS2, while not what you might calla hardcore sim, certainly delivers one of the best VR experiences available right now.

I think VR is definitely here to stay, and it is only going to continue to get better. Exciting times!

Arma already has VR. Didnt work well for me tho.

Can you expand on this please? I would be happy just flying choppers in the editor without anyone to shoot etc

been a long time but when i was dicking around with a DK2 arma2 would vr just out of the box.

OK GUYS OMG! Someone just lent me their Oculus CV1!
Downloading the software now (3.57 GB?!) then I’m going to try immediately Elite Dangerous!

Any tips for popping my VR cherry?

You should start a new topic, it will be fun to record your experiences!

Elite is amazing in VR. You’re going to weep like a baby.

Other than that let us know when set up and we all probably have recommendations of things to try. DCS is great, BoX is great.

Have you also borrowed the Touch controllers?

I’m not going to have it long enough to justify a whole thread… It’s tonight and tomorrow so- I’m just going to cram as many minutes of Elite, Battle of Stalingrad and DCS- I just have a humble 780ti OC so I still have to see how my PC handle it…

Also, no, no touch controllers which limits me a bit- wanted to try some VR demo. It’s ok- if it’s really that good I’ll rob a bank.

Ah, Assetto Corsa is also looking at me with puppy eyes… any other big good game to try in VR?

With limited time that will probably be enough. With the Oculus library install there are a good couple of free things to check out:

  • Oculus Dreamdeck (the sort of ‘intro’ experience without touch worth trying first to get bearings).
  • Google Earth VR
  • Oculus Medium

Other than that, Elite, DCS/IL-2 and Assetto will be plenty.

On your 780ti do turn graphics options stuff down i.e. don’t ‘oversample’ or set pixel density over 1.0 as getting frame rates reliably in VR is more important than looks - especially if you don’t want to feel ill…
