Some sims with a Index / G2 / Aero (Mmm, chocolate bubbles…) comparison

Damn, that thing features some amazing tech.

As a hobby photographer, I find the fact that it has aspherical elements incredibly cool. Those elements were only found on very high end lenses until very recently because they had to be separately calculated for every optical design which was incredibly complex and expensive.

A couple of years ago a Mexican PhD student developed a general formular to calculate aspherical elements for optical designs which made them much cheaper to design and produce so today they are way more common on lenses, even ones that don’t cost >2000€.

Not that much difference between the Aero and G2, and there really shouldn’t be as the G2 resolution already is good enough. The colors in the Aero seem to pop a bit…

I also wonder if the ‘Through the lens’ photos and videos have reached the limit of their usefulness… The resolution and optics of these VR displays are so good that you’d have to be very careful when setting up the camera, to get everything just perfect.

I think the main differences between the G2 and Aero will be slightly larger FoV, better comfort and a clearer image due to aspheric lenses that gets rid of the fresnel god ray and ghosting issues.

Edit. Not that the G2 needs much improvement in the image quality dept. but a larger sweetspot would be nice.

Yep, I think you’re paying for the huge sweet spot as the pixel density is similar. For sims it’s probably worth it as well.

Yeah, if it had that, I would have swapped out the Index for a G2 right away.
Looking forward to a review of that Aero :eyes:

The main thing aspherical, or rather biaspherical elements (they are corrective elements that come in pairs), offer is edge to edge sharpness, basically no chromatic abberations and very little ghosting. It’s one of the reasons I can point the camera with my expensive RF glas at an object with the sun in the frame and still get great contrast and colours.

If I do that with my older EF70-200mm f/2.8 which was a very expensive lens at the time, the image needs much more editing to get a similar result and even then it won’t look as good as my 15-35mm.

Since in a VR headset you have bright screens that you need to focus on the eyes, the use of aspherical elements should result in an amazing experience.

Yeah…I’m not interested in tracking towers. My desk is a nightmare already…I don’t need more cables…

I’m only 2 minutes into that video and I’m scared for my wallet. Damnit.

dont worry, they have to seat at least 1.5 - 2 meters from you, so unless you have very big desk they wont be sitting on it

Dang…his appeal to G2 owners at 11:20 or so is pretty compelling. Double drat.

So after watching that video comparison of the Aero, Index, and G2, I’ll agree that the Aero is the best. But IMHO, it’s not $2000+ better (adding tracking and controllers) than the G2. Most of the time it feels like I’m waiting for a VR unicorn. But for almost 4 x the cost, we should get one. In other words, when you look passed a few hundred yards, things begin to look blurry. The distance viewing still looks like crap in all 3 of those headsets. I suppose that consumer affordable tech just isn’t there yet.

Glad that it’s an option for those that have the financial resources, but for me, the incremental improvement at such a high cost is analogous to a Kickstarter campaign. The price to performance ratio is off the chart on this one, especially without tracking and audio.

Having said that, I’m giddy to hear what @Troll thinks once it has arrived.

VR FS guy is quite happy with the distance view in Aero, something like ‘I can count the individual trees on the hill side in the distance’. but maybe he can see them because ‘he wants to see them’…

Exactly. I’m less inclined to trust his opinion as compared to Sabastian and Tyler.

I wonder if he could hear Schrödinger’s cat scream as the tree toppled over…

Sorry for the tangent into optics but it’s something I find fascinating

Had to look up the general formula for biaspherical elements and didn’t remember that it was a solution to a problem posed by Isaac Newton himself.

Here is the formula in all its glory, it’s quite something:

Ooh, actually is looking like a new SKU instead. Rumour is it’s new placement of the cameras. US only and for new purchases only. :expressionless:

That’s incredible. I bet that even Mat Damon couldn’t solve that one

Yeah, I don’t immediately know how to word this at the moment so, well; some reviewers are never anything but “effervescent” (giddy, bubbling). That’s not bad of course but I have to read around the corners with them more so than others.
