Got my Odyssey+ through PaulRix (thank you). No current HOTAS, so this game made perfect sense to try out. I have to admit I am loving it so far. Very smooth and easy to manipulate the cockpit controls. Using the hand controllers for the stick and throttle hasn’t been too much of an issue. I do miss the feel of the throttle. I have a hard time gauging where the throttle setting is without looking down to see it’s position. I miss the tactile response.
I started out flying on the F/A-26B, but I didn’t see a tutorial with it, so I am figuring it out as I go. I will have to go back and see if the AV-42 has a tutorial and learn more that way. I am lacking ins some of the basics, I still don’t know how to apply the wheel or speed brakes and I don’t know what, if any, of the hand controller buttons do.
I am appreciating that fighter piloting is a young man’s game. I am having a hard time craning my neck to see above and over my shoulders. All the while at only 1g. It was much easier with the TrackIR, those small inputs and I was looking behind me no problem.
Looking forward to getting more training and into some missions.
It really is a physical workout isn’t it? I’ll bet @smokinhole can expand on that and give us a glimpse at what it must feel like at 3 or 4 (or more) Gs… I can’t imagine.

What fighter pilots do and what we do in aerobatics are quite different. They fly in sustained g while keeping the head on a swivel. A lot more athleticism (and grunting) is required to do that well. We fly higher g’s but in much shorter bursts. Where we might suffer more is in the quick transition from positive to negative g. And our negative g’s are higher. They do little negative past 1 or 2g. Importantly though, we don’t move our heads as much. Honestly, aside from the conscious breathing and tightening, I do as much work dogfighting in VR. As far as g-suffering goes, it really isn’t bad. Most of what pilots suffer early in their aerobatic life is fear, lack of confidence and failure to breathe properly. After a few hours, it feels great—even the negative stuff.
Yeah…I think you are spot on with that. So much air sickness and nausea is due to anxiety for new students. Once they gain some confidence, I’ve rarely seen a student get sick again.
Great video from a funny and enthusiastic guy. I think he might have decided an oil rig is an aircraft carrier…but hey… The arm gestures and just general feel of the video is really funny though. I genuinely enjoy when people love sims (VTOL VR or any sim) and his enthusiasm is great.
The controllers, I can click the switches and buttons in the cockpit, no problem.
I click the side button on the controllers and with the left I control the throttle and the right the control stick. I have to keep the button depressed to stay in control of the these.
Right trigger fires selected weapon, left trigger deploys wheel/air brakes.
Right thumb stick will slew and lock onto target (I think it’s the thumb stick and not the trackpad, can’t remember).
Beyond that, not sure how to use the controllers. My biggest question is how to switch between weapons. I can bring up the weapons on the MFD and select the weapon, but it’s still not the weapon showing in the HUD. I can’t get beyond the canon. I also don’t know how to pop flare/chaff. What other button combos am I missing?
I’ve tried finding info on-line, but no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
For the rift you gotta be holding the stick (typically with the right hand ) it’s then one of the buttons on the right controller. Don’t know wich one that would be for the oddysey+.
Appreciate reply.
Right hand I am holding side stick button down so it is acting as joystick. Trigger fires weapon, track pad doesn’t do anything, if I click down thumb stick it pauses game and takes me to Steam menu. I have the menu button (button has 3 horizontal stacked lines) that doesn’t seem to do anything and a windows button which I think brings me back to Odyssey home screen.
Is there a way to set up buttons? Maybe I’m missing something really simple in a menu I’m by-passing.
Got it figured out. As I suspected, something simple. Went into settings and the thumb controller section was turned off, not sure what default is. Turned it on and now I can switch weapons using the “menu” button and slew using the trackpad. I also now can punch off flare/chaff with left stick “menu” button.
Now trying to learn the AMRAAM radar locking, no luck yet, but I’ll get there.
I’m still not there and tried for about two hours last night.
Radar is on, tracking planes. Use the thumb track pad on right stick to slew the "I I " over target. It snaps to the target when close, but will lose track after about a second or two. What I’ve read is that once it’s snapped to double tap the track pad and it will lock. But when I do this, touching the pad makes the cursor jump all over the radar screen. Not sure if I should be clicking something else to lock the target.
With the Odyssey+ the thumb sticks can move, but clicking them will pause the game and bring me to the Steam menu. I’m guessing the thumb stick is how other systems are slewing and locking, not sure how to change to use on the Odyssey+.
I had the same problem with not being able to lock with the WMR controller. I’ve been just reaching forward and locking using the MFD I think…I’ll have to check.
That’s what I do I’m sure. Haven’t flown the 26 in a long time. I much prefer the av-42c and hardly ever fly anything else. I love doing troop extractions so much.
