It really is a fantastic mix of simple graphics, fun gameplay, and complex avionics. What I love about it is that there is rarely a mystery as to why I get shot down. You can generally see all the stuff being lobbed at you, and you can survive if you play conservatively and usually pay the price if you play using risky tactics. I love the carrier operations, the feeling of moving hands around the cockpit, and the physical exertion of craning my neck around the cockpit to keep ground and air targets in sight. The physics of it all feels great too.
As far as I know - yes, a one man development āteamā and he is so responsiveā¦
The S-cam alone is worth the $30. Being able to get any recording angle! Seriously. Iām surprised that no other developers, at least in flight or racing games, have caught on. Unless Iāve missed something.
The use of controllers makes it great to not have to move all my HOTAS gear into place. Although I find the lack of resistance/tension a bit unorthodox. Iām still trying to find that re-center sweet spot so that every button, switch, and HOTAS are reachable or my arms arenāt hitting my seat or my desk.
All in all good fun. Lots of community support. Someday multiplayer will open all kinds of doors.
This looks like a mod - but this could be great for VTOL VR. The early builds had some puffy clouds that were removed for performance. These lookā¦fantasticā¦
So what Iām reading in the Discord channel is that this is a test feature that wasnāt really meant to maybe be discovered yet. It might be able to be started by pressing and holding the āOā key for several seconds. I have not tested that theory.
Wow, the clouds look very nice and add substantially to the look and feel of this already excellent sim.
Btw, new guy here. Bought VTOL VR right after reading the extensive review here. Iāve been a flight sim wannabe for decades. Only with VTOL VR have I actually learned enough to take off and land. Iām also dabbling in DCS and IL2 but loving VTOL VR and hoping it will improve with better performance and visuals.
Glad you came and joined us after reading the article. Iām a huge fan of VTOL VR - it really feels like a real cockpit and love all the motions required to do things. And I love the attitude of the developerā¦he constantly plugs away at making it better.
I tried the press-and-hold-O-key to see if I could enable those awesome clouds and had no luck. Tried on open beta and release. Also tried shift-O as well. I will take a stumble in the Discord but if anyone has more info, please share.
Secondarily, I noticed my monitor was showing what appears to be a third person view, most likely chase plane view. I had not enabled the spectator camera. Is this normal? I assume anything except first person view will reduce FPS. I was getting between 50-80fps on my Ryzen 3950X and Radeon VII GPU but am always hungry for more.
I did eventually get the press-and-hold-o key method to work. You have to hold it down just before hitting the Launch button and keep it held down through the loading screen until the cockpit view appears. Thatās what worked for me anyways. I will try the config file method as well since that will be more convenient.
At first I had very low framerates, around 20, but noticed somehow my supersampling was set to almost 200%. I lowered Steamās SS setting to 100%, which resulted in an actual SS of around 150% (thank you fpsVR utility). I also reduced some of the cloud slider values on the PC monitor. That got me back to 65-80fps though I donā know which method made the biggest difference. I will experiment with it more when I have more time but itās no fun to keep having to switch between googles and flat display. I also updated to Windows 2004 at the same time so I think it has set up an SS value which is being applied additively to Steamās.
Adding USE_OVERCLOUD = True to the cfg file worked. Much easier than holding down the O key so thanks. Anything that requires lifting the goggles is supremely annoying in my setup since I need to swivel my chair away from my desk so I can hit all the switch gear in my VR cockpit.
Some notes: switching to a new cloud preset happens gradually over many seconds so donāt expect instant results. I had to wiggle my mouse around those preset buttons to get them to highlight. If you click when itās not highlighted, then I donāt think the setting changes. This coupled with the weather latency made me think the presets didnāt work at all for a while. Now that Iāve got it figured out, itās pretty cool to go from clear to rain to stormy. Beautiful. Besides multiple player, I hope the developer will continue graphics and performance enhancements.
