VTOL VR

I wonder if the engineers at Virpil ever envisioned their fine hardware being used as a glorified mop handle in a gravel bucket to stabilize a VR hand controller that uses accelerometers for actual control input? :joy:

That’s pretty cool honestly. I was thinking “but the controller is your hand, which will be tied to the joystick
” until the magnet part. Nice!

One of the most advanced gimbal systems ever made for the home PC flightsimmer

Question guys, and before you ask, I humbly stand before you with head bowed. I have only read a few posts in this thread. :weary:

Situation: I have a daughter, who is a bit different from her sisters. She makes straight As in a gifted child program in school, excels in sports, is completely fearless (she rides electric skateboards with her old man), works hard and helps around the house, has the confidence and determination of a honey badger, extremely technically inclined (she makes sport out of obviating parental controls), and is combative to the point that my wife and I whisper that’s going to be the first attorney in the family. Not to discard the other two. They are just on a more traditional trajectory. You know, stuffed animals, baking cookies, and Toca Life.

You see where I’m going with this. I’ve gathered enough parts to build a second flight sim rig, probably most likely similar to what @BeachAV8R did for his boys. Do you think that VTOL VR would be a better gateway drug introduction to flight and ultimately combat flight simming than say DCS? More “fun” and less system intensive than DCS? I also thought about MSFS, but a little worried about system specs in VR.

VTOL VR is a great intro into VR flight.
Another one is Aerofly FS, but that might not be competitive enough for her. And VTOL VR has multiplayer so she can beat her old man

Too true. I forgot to ask about multiplayer, which was my ultimate goal. OK, let the rig building begin. Maybe it’s time to hit the Virpil store for a stick upgrade. I think that I have everything else, including the Troll modified lift equipped CM2 throttle. Hope that she appreciates your craftsmanship!

VTOL VR only use VR hand controllers

Really? I guess that I would know that if I’d read further. OK, might not be a deal killer since she is pretty active in the Quest 2. In fact that would give me time to gather an appropriate HOTAS setup.

Yeah, it’s one of the things that makes VTOL VR so special. And hand controller flying works really well.

good on ya old man !

how about some flight sim racing ala Reno? or flight sim navigation ala our Xmas flights? or circumnavigation ala Zara?

I wasnt really happy when Beach started playing Arma with his boys. didnt say anything back then though.
but no worries I am just another old man who play with the thoughts not in the common sense of ‘want peace? prepare for war’ but more like ‘want peace? make love, not war’.

anyway it can cost you more in hw but can be similarly satisfying and challenging.
with MSFS you have the whole damn world and MP.

and for some inspiration

I like the way you think and I was honestly going along the same lines

I kinda lean towards “It’s an ugly world, teach facts of life.” There’s probably a more eloquent way of putting it, but I have no issue with teaching both the value of human life, and that there are good guys and bad guys and conflict happens.

I do as well. My son and i play arma and other shooters. To be honest I’m not a great believer in video games being a cause for bad behaviour or problems. I think its just an excuse for a lack of parental control and communication.

No I don’t believe any of that either but I know that some kids more than other are emotionally affected by violent scenes. I know I was. My father had me watch Robocop when I was freaking 8 and I was literally paralyzed by terror, couldn’t even tell him how I felt.

Yeah, Robocop at 8 might be a bit much.

All things in moderation and all

While I agree that some games and simulations tend to trivialize and glorify violence, my wife is doing her best to raise them in a vacuum. But having been brought up during the Cold War by a cold warrior, I guess that I lean more toward @WarPig and @Victork2 's line of thought. Was it Caesar that said, “Pray for peace, but prepare for war”?

On the other hand, the older I get, the more that I realize that the children of politicians who get us into wars, rarely are called on to fight them.

FYI, my daughter and I watched some VTOL VR videos last night. I think we are going to have fun learning it together.

There’s a two seat trainer in there now too
I haven’t tried it, but it looks like heaps of fun!
And yeah, I too wish we lived in a peaceful world where everybody was set on helping eachother. Real life has taught me that it’s just a dream. But, as @komemiute says, we need to be careful about how and when we introduce our kids to the harsh realities of life. I wish kids came with a parenting manual

Thats fair, id agree with that.

I just explain that everything is made up, stories and nonsense. Not wishing to start a row, but the kids go to a church of england school and often come home parroting what they learn at school about “god”

Daddy dont play that either. But I try to be sensitive about it.

Stories and nonsense. Terminator, paw patrol, the bible.

Stories and nonsense. Use the bits you like, forget the bits you dont
