Welcome to the Mudspike Forums!

Hey @jross. Welcome!

Welcome aboard!

Welcome aboard. Lots of old time simmers here that got their start in the 80s.

Thanks for your ATC service. Were you a Center controller? I’m about halfway through the book Collision Course about the PATCO strike. Really interesting to read about F. Lee Bailey and all of the stuff that led up to that period.

We have lots of guys that fish here too. Anytime I can find some water and some time I love to wet a line…

Glad to have ya’…

Center 25 years, yes. First 10 years AF, RAPCON. Ah, the strike. Was around for that. Saw it from the outside (as controller in the AF) and the inside immediately post strike. I probably knew some of those mentioned in the book (not read it), or at least their successors. Lotta politics there too.

Fishing keeps me sane. At least the way I do it: Kayak’s Rule!

If anyone ever gets down her look me up. I have a special “Mudspike” discount - or I will :). Most days you can see jets cruising overhead too.

My videos aren’t up to date - takes too dang long to make them anymore, and I don’t film when I have a client, usually.

If by any chance that time ever comes again I’ll be your bestest friend forever…lol

Welcome to mudspike

Hello boys…I’m of course a newbie to the sight. I’m a former SIM player…like, REALLY former. I haven’t played a SIM since Falcon 2.0 and Fleet Defender…LONG time ago…I recently stumbled on some photos of my belove F-14 and then stumbled upon knowledge of DCS. I’m solely getting back into PC gaming for the Tomcat module in DCS. I’ve noticed that the technology(flight sticks, throttles, etc) has grown significantly along with graphics and software sincce my hay day, I’m critically behind the 8 ball. Really looking foward to picking minds for information. At any rate, glad to be here!!

Welcome back to Flight Simming @Thumper! And welcome to Mudspike!

thanks champ!!

I was in the same boat, having left flight simming behind for other pursuits. And then VR happened. And now it’s all I do with my game time. So if you need some BFM sparring/instructions, hit me up.

Thanks Schurem! I’m currently deployed to Qatar, but I have been reading like a madman trying to catchup with the rest of the sim world knowledged based wise. Can’t do anything from here, but I did buy my cockpit already…Virpil f14 flight stick with the CM2 base a few months ago and i just bought the new Virpil mongoose 50CM2 throttle with mounts for stick and throttle earlier today. I’m going to go VKB for the rudder. So all that will be waiting for me once I’m BACK HOME. I wont forget to take you up on your word!!

Hey @Thumper and welcome!
There’s never been a better time to pick up flightsimming!
If you were around back in those olden, golden, days you’re no stranger to bugs.
Those are still around, but unlike before, they get fixed and new ones are introduced.
Frustrating at times, but thinking of how far sims have come, blows my mind.

Thnaks Troll! One thing i had forgotten about and dread dealing with. There was no customer support really back then. Alot of my immediate frustrations will come from the whole software/binding/axis configuration setup! Good grief…ive gone through so many threads about the subject, its like trying to learn Latin! lol And then I went with Virpil and their software looks like a cross between Calculus/Economics/and Trig!! Gearing up for that challenge.

LOL! You are not wrong!
It can be intimidating at first. I know the VPC software pretty well. The guy who wrote it also wrote a freeware USB controller software for arduino micro controllers which allows for really cool DIY game controller designs. And I have made a few of those
And the flightsims, that used to be considered advanced if they could accept input from two 4 button joysticks simulataneously, now have hundreds of input parameters and can even handle shift conditions… Yeah, things have changed!

You know you just gave me a headache? LoL SMH…Cant wait for you to get the new throttle! By time I get back from deployment, i would think you will have it down pat!

For future reference, in your t50CM stick, put the aviasim without centering on pitch on a strong spring and a centering cosmosim cam on roll with a little less spring force. That’s where I found its happy place.

Was saved by VR here too.

After 35-ish years, it was getting stale. TrackIR helped, a bit. Was only [gasp!] doing Big Iron/Tube-liners in P3D…and not very often the last few years.

I went to a tech fair in KSAN mid-90’s. They had a VR booth. Ugly compared to my O+ now but I thought, “oh baby, any day now!”. What sux is I could afford the top-tier gear then. Not so much anymore.

And complexity?

With the noted exception of Falcon 4’s release, I don’t really remember as many complications.

Though I do have quite the ‘process’ now; reading my desktop icons from left to right, after pluging in the VR headset, and sub-woofer amp, and headset, there’s:

WMR
SteamVR
SRS client
VoiceAttack
SimShaker
Joystick Gemlin.
Oh, and finally the DCS icon.
Somehow it all works.

So I guess it’s partly my fault :expressionless:

Well, you had to learn to edit autoexec.bat and config.sys…
But yeah, the sims themselves are a lot more complex today. Their businessmodels are more complex too.

Ick. Yeah, forgot about all that.

Schurem,I wish I knew what the H-E-double hockey sticks you ar talking about, but I’ll pin the convo for future reference indeed. LOL
