What are your up and download speeds?

I really live in a banana republic

At least I got GFast G.Vector now, before that it used to be 1 Mbps upload.

My ISP upgraded the speed again.
400 down / 40 up.

I used to have 300/30.

500/500 but in reality more like this

Oh, boo hoo… my heart bleeds :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I was getting around 24Mbps down and 4Mbps up. with only 90GB data between 0700 and mignight and 140GB data midnight to 0700, per month.

I’m guessing that the Skymuster satellites are under subscribed (the National Broadband Network is rolling out 4G fixed wireless in remote areas rather than satellite these days) because our ISP now offers unlimited data plans and even though the advertised speed is still 25/5 I’m now getting the following (and it is $15 per month cheaper).

Love the ping speed … :smiling_imp:

Very apt isn’t it.

I did notice just now that my download is NOT as fast as it’s supposed to be. Well I did a quick test and then checked my router and I think something went wrong at my provider. I know it’s a bad case of first world problems but I should be getting double of this:

Guess who’s getting a call tomorrow

Figure’d necro’ing this was a better option then starting a new one.

Top one is on the 5ghz wifi, the router sits about 7’ away from my laptop. Second one is hard lined on a cat 8 cable through a USB-C ethernet to USB convertor (I wasn’t paying attention when I got my laptop, and didn’t get an ethernet port).

The pings on both are usually around 3ms, so the wifi is usually plenty for my needs. But it’s good to know I’m actually getting the GB internet I pay for if I ever need it. If I can find an old cat 5/6 cable, I’ll run it and see what the drop off is.

To make you all feel better, here’s mine. Australian NBN fixed wireless - third world speeds at first world prices!

Edit: no points detailing the connection between the phone and the network, carrier pigeon might have slightly higher ping but that’s it…

I’m supposed to be on a 1Gbps connection but I think my ancient router is the bottleneck.

Alright speed test and real world application numbers, because why not. It’s about 0350 in the morning, so it’s about as good as it’s going to get for network speed.

First up the speed tests:

Red is hard-lined with a CAT8 cable, green is the 5ghz wifi, and violet is hard-lined with a random CAT5E cable I had laying around.

So the good news is I am certainly getting the 1gb speed I’m paying google for. I’d be curious to see what happens with plain jane CAT5 cabling, I think I’ve got some laying around somewhere.

So real world performance 2 minutes prior to this test on steam using the hardline:

45.7 MB/s is roughly 380 mbps, so even on the wifi I’m not missing out on download speeds.

I’m sure something will happen that will make it make sense to go back to hardlines (streaming 4K VR or something), but for me at least I’m enjoying a wireless life.

Starlink is doing quite well this morning…

This was using my iPad connecting to the Starlink WiFi 6 router.

Starlink isn’t the cheapest at $120 per month, but it is far superior to any of the other options when you don’t have access to cable.

Edit> I should add that the connection speeds are not always this good, but usually at least 150mbps/15Mbps

So, guys I think I need help.

The USB wifi receiver I was using to connect to the internet (the router isn’t in my apartment) suddenly is not working anymore.

It says it’s connected to the Wifi, it gets a correct IP address and all that Jazz via DHCP, but it doesn’t have a connection to the proper ISP.

The same wifi is well accepted by my phone and a tablet I temporarily got from a friend for testing…

BUT

If I use my phone to create a tethering to the PC via that same USB wifi receiver, it frigging works!

So how can that be? Either the antenna is broken - or not?!

Is it advisable to buy a new (more modern) wifi receiver - maybe one that directly connects to the PC via ethernet cable - in the hope that it works?

What other tests can I perform?

That kinda refutes your “the USB WIFI receiver is broken” theory.

Can you force the router to reboot? Do you have access to its configuration frontend?
Maybe you can read the router event log when you try to access the WIFI with your PC?

The router is obviously not the problem.
Everything else, beside the PC antenna, works flawlessly. My kids two phones, the Nintendo switch, the tablet…

There must be something in the difference between the mobile-generated tethering connection and the router’s wifi.

I didn’t mean to imply it was, but something precludes your PC from connecting to it. Maybe that something will show up in the router log.

But to directly answer your questions :

  • No, can’t reboot the router. I get free wifi, free of charge because the landlady had it set up for me. So also no control on the frontend.

You do have me thinking that someone might have somehow changed the configuration and excluded my PC.
