What we watching? – Mudspike at the movies

Anyone watch The Northman? I’d been anticipating it for a month. I love Icelandic sagas almost as much as I like Anya Taylor-Joy. But the movie left me more confused than entertained. Now, having read reviews in the Guardian and NYTs, I see that it’s obviously me, not the film. I’ll give it another go when it streams.

It was an ok flick … of course you know that the feds set that 15 year old kid up and he got a life sentence. What a surprise. I think he spent 30 years behind bars.

I’m working my way through “Unbroken” now. Nasty what this guy went through … not for the faint of heart and unfortunately it’s a true story …

Greg Boyington and Zamperini spent time together under the gentle care of The Bird. Imo Boyington’s book written in the 1950’s doesn’t white wash the attitudes the men had towards the Japanese, especially their jailers, as much as I felt was done with the book and movie Unbroken.

Watched “The Suicide Squad” last night…
The Suicide Squad (2021) - IMDb
It was hilarious, with some very witty writing in more moments that I would have imagined.

BUT

To be honest, there’s so much gratuitous graphic violence… It gets tiring and in some places almost feels a bit unnecessary.

Still a solid movie: 5/7

Have you watched ‘Peacemaker’ on hbo? Technically not a movie, but the series was directed/written by the same guy.

Was pretty good, about the same ratio of funny to gross.

Ah! I didn’t know about that!
Sadly I don’t have an HBO sub…
Already have Disney+ and Amazon Prime.

Yeah, the Guardians of the Galaxy guy.
I didn’t care for the first Suicide Squad film at all, but I liked the 2nd and Peacemaker well enough. Good comedy and the violence is deliberately over the top.
He’s the funny Paul Verhoeven.

Just seen the first Venom and I found it brilliant!
Why people hate it?
It was cool, irreverent, and the right amount of violent. ^-^

Super Fun, it’s definitely on the topside of my most favorite Superhero/villain movie!

Saw this a few months ago - I was in tears at the end.

The 2nd one is similar but I found the story a bit more cohesive.

I watched about an hour of it and had to bail. I didn’t find it engaging and was slow paced. They devoted a lot of time to male/female relationships. Might be okay for some people.

It just happens to be true however. You would probably roably enjoy the original film

My impression was the same as @saghen’s. The interpersonal stuff took away from an amazing story.

Watched Avanti yesterday on Amazon Prime.

I do not see many under 30 watching this movie. It is long in movie terms, just shy of 2.5 hours, and definitely an odd premise. I did enjoy it but mainly because of Jack Lemmon. Had it been a movie of unknowns I doubt I would have stuck it out. All I can really say for a review is that I found it quirky and unusual but not great.

It is leaving Amazon Prime May 30, 2022, or tomorrow.
