We watched that a while back - not bad at all. I wanted to watch it again recently but got overruled!
Two different but very similar films. Both excellent remakes of excellent films.
Maybe I have reached that stage of my life where a film that focusses my attention on my impending mortality, how have I lived my life and what ‘legacy’ I wish to leave behind really resonates with me.
The first is “Living” with Bill Nighy (not the science guy). A remake of “Ikiru”, which I have seen (I am a huge fan of Kurosawa & Seven Samauri, Yojimbo and Ikiru are three of my favourite films):
The second is “A Man Called Otto” with Tom Hanks. It is hard (for me) not to watch one of his films. I don’t think I have ever been disappointed and this is no exception. A remake of the Swedish film “A man called Ove”. I haven’t seen it but I am now in the process of tracking it down so that I can. Just about every Swedish film or TV series that I have seen has been better than the English language remake. e.g. “The Girl With…” trilogy, “Let the Right One In” and even though Kenneth Branagh’s “Wallander” is very good it isn’t as good as the original (IMHO):
I was briefly extremely confused (and perhaps disconcerted) by this.
I remembered, after watching The Foreigner, spotting my former workplace as one of the sets in the film. It’s the ‘home’ of the Irish politician played by Pierce Brosnan.
At first I said to the Mrs “hey - that looks like my old workplace” and sure enough, as they showed more scenes from the area I realised it was!
It was the previous US Ambassador to Germany’s residence in Bonn - complete with all the movement detectors and security office shown in the film, as they were in real life.
Whaddya know!
Kiss Me, Stupid
Jealous piano teacher Orville Spooner sends his beautiful wife, Zelda, away for the night while he tries to sell a song to famous nightclub singer Dino, who is stranded in town.
It is definitely a movie of its time and not one I would recommend. Only reason I mention the movie at all was early in the movie when Dino rolls into town the gas prices at the Shell station gave me a huge laugh. A whopping $5.15 for 15.2 gallons. The price came out to be $0.339 cents a gallon and a DIME of that was for taxes!
Wheels
watching a couple of different things at the moment… (wildly different )
I found this series today … intriguing so far (first two ep)
and have been watching this with my daughters (both seriously into anime)
this is a new version with CG animation, i havent seen the old one, just called trigun … but this may be either a prequel or a reboot going into more depth on the characters
This honestly leaft me misty eyed… What an amazing example of humanity.
So much SHOULD be learned.
Had the chance to watch Greyhound last week. Very enjoyable naval war movie. Maybe some overly dramatic scenes at times but still good!
I just wish it was available for free on Amazon
So, the winner of the most Oscars this year.
After the film I am a bit loss of words. Not my cup of tea. I would describe it as silly, low budget amateurish flick with thin plot and ok acting.
Had to watch it in two sessions to make it through two and a half hours of this craziness. Maybe I just didn’t get it.
Oh man, I loved every layer of that. Yes it’s insane, but there’s reason to the madness, let me tell ya.
I really really didn’t like it. The actors were amazing. The plot just didnt grip me
My wife loved it but it just felt really disjointed and hard work.
HOLY CARP! There’s Bob Odenkirk’s "Nobody’’ for free on Amazon!
Leaps and bounds better than the John Wick sequels
Agreed. Loved it.
I had to do the same thing on Saturday - was not captivated by it, but thought it was the type of Arty thing the Hollywood people would like.
Thought it was more than decent myself - but I’m a sucker for any movie that explores themes of alternate planes of existence / multiverse / etc.
As far as the Oscars go. From what I saw of the categories it won, there wasn’t a lot of competition? One or two movies that I liked better… but only by a coin toss.
Thanks for that. I will definitely have to rewatch this
The book is excellent (The Good Shepherd" CS Forester). Have not seen the film yet.
