What we watching? – Mudspike at the movies

Found Mannix on Pluto TV. Pluto TV only has the first two of the eight seasons.

This is another Desilu production so several of the guest stars will be familiar.

The computer room with the reel to reel and punch cards was a gas to see. Our smartphones of today probably have as much computing power as that entire room.

That series ran for 8 years! Much longer than that other Desilu Productions show that took place in space.

They sure have!

I made a thread about that topic once, if you are interested in that kind of thing:

Desilu was highly prolific in the 1950’s and 1960’s with several of the shows they produced or that were filmed at the studio beating that 3 year run.

Television shows produced by or filmed at Desilu

I somehow just found out about Slow Horses a couple days ago. Decided to give it a watch yesterday and ended up blowing through the first two seasons. All round excellent acting, cinematography, and story.

I’m re-watching Firefly all the way through instead of just watching the episode Our Mrs Reynolds every time I remember the show.

I’d forgotten how good it was right from the very beginning.

For reasons I cannot explain, I was not into Firefly on its original airing. I watched maybe 3 or 4 of them and then lost interest. I then came back when they were around 5 or 6 further and started to get into it again…and it was canceled.
I got the DVDs later (and BD in following years) and really liked it.

As with so many other TV shows where I didn’t really like the 1st season the first time around, when I go back and rewatch it, now being familiar with the characters/settings/etc, I like it far more.

What made that show really work was the cast. It was the proverbial “lightning in a bottle”.

I guess I am another who thought that Firefly was OK but not great. I did however re-watch it after it had ended (just before the movie was released) so that I could view the episodes in the order they were meant to be released. It made a lot more sense when I did that.

A mate who knew I needed a bit of a laugh right now and knows I am a bit of a sucker for a good whodunnit, recommended this:

I have only just watched the first episode. First impressions are that it is trying (a bit too?) hard to cash in on the Knives Out and Only Murders in the Building bandwagon… But as an Aussie, this scene had me almost wetting myself laughing:

Edit/Update: Episode 2 was worth even if just to hear Kylie drop the F Bomb. I will keep watching this.

Same. I don’t hate it, but I don’t really get the hype either.

I remember Firefly back when I was religiously keeping up with the BSG remake. For some reason it didn’t appeal to me but I don’t recall why. I might try it and see if my tastes have changed.

I remember at that time that many people didn’t care for the mingling of the sci-fi and Western genres. I never saw the series when it originally aired so I actually ended up watching the theatrical released movie “Serenity” before I watched the series. When I rented the series from Netflix though I was instantly hooked.

So not up at all on anime films (besides ‘the big ones’ like akira and ghost in the shell) but randomly saw this recommended on a sci-fi movie list and it was pretty great

the look of it was incredible, the story was interesting (and well told). Would say check it out if you were in the mood for a sci-fi movie and you’re not opposed to animation.

Firefly pulled it off far better than Cowboys and Aliens. That was a film that should have worked but just failed on every level except casting and production value.

The last good western/space mix I recall being good from my rosy college days was Cowboy Bebop :joy:

Westworld for me. I was a huge fan of the series but can also understand why some viewers left as the seasons progressed.

Westworld had many moments of utter brilliance. I loved it. And then it became… meh.

The series wasn’t afraid to take creative risks but the seismic change with season 3 was too much for some viewers.

I am watching The Wheel of Time season 3 now.

Unlike many fans of the book series I did enjoy the first two seasons already, but I feel like the current third season is where the show really takes off.

I hope it continues this way, and gets the chance to run a few more seasons.
