What we watching? – Mudspike at the movies

I’ve been rewatching many of my Mystery Science Theater dvds recently. Have you ever wondered what it was like to be a car salesman in 1941? This is absolute gold.

I had never heard of cars being sold door to door. That would have to have been a rough gig.

All I kept thinking about when I first watched that film was that those stressed out sales men and sales managers would have nothing to worry about very soon since Chevrolet would be getting some pretty big orders from the US government……

That never crossed my mind.
All I could think of was how tough a sale a vacuum cleaner was to sell door to door let alone a car that cost exponentially more. I mean a vacuum might be an impulse buy but never a car.

Man, their shorts are a lot of times better than their features.

I watched Grace Quigley (1984) with Katharine Hepburn and Nick Nolte on Amazon Prime today.

I did not love this movie but I did not hate it either. It was just different and I think the 5.7 rating at IMDb is a fair one.

Anyone else get the theme music from a show you are binge watching stuck on a loop in your subconscious? I have been watching multiple episodes of Ironside for the last couple of weeks and the intro and closing music just keeps playing and playing and playing. Heck it woke me up again this morning.

It took 6 months for that to stop when I binge watched Mission Impossible, the 1960’s TV version, to stop looping.

The Goodies always did that for me… I would walk around for days singing it to myself.

In fact I have ‘goody, goody, yum, yum’ bouncing around my head now.

Found CHiPs on Amazon Prime. When the TV series first aired I was living in the Midwest and Los Angeles and it’s surrounding areas were some places I thought I would likely never see. Little did I know that I would be living there just 2 short years later.

Now a little over 48 years since it first aired in 1977 I am watching the show and seeing how much the area where it has filmed has changed. The Rockford files was still in production at that time so you see several of the same filming locations but you would be hard pressed to find them if you don’t have some long time familiarity with the area.

As with all TV shows of the time the amount of stock footage being used is shocking. Binge watching makes it all the more noticeable.

With the exception of historic and public buildings I would think the LA of today is completely different from the LA of 1977. On a related note, the Miami you see in Miami Vice is almost unrecognizable from what Miami looks like now.

Pretty much spot on with regards to Los Angeles.

Several of the scenes on the open highway were filmed on the 210 which has been built up in the last 48 years.

LA has worse traffic than Miami so I can only imagine……

Something else that has been a gas to watch is all the 1970’s land yachts with their lousy suspensions they are chasing on their motorcycles in every episode that all the US car makers were producing in that era.

That reminds me of my very first car: a 1983 Chevy Caprice Classic. You could fit about 5 people in the back seat.

So, since I am in a nice small apartment covered by my company I have access to Netflix and there’s a show that caught my eye.

Lioness.

I usually dislike shows that glorify violence for violence sake, especially gratuitous vigilante stuff clothed in Patriotism nonsense.

And yet.

Zoe Saldana act marvelously, and the script is solid, even if there’s several flaws in the premise.

Loosely bases on a real concept, I found it riveting.

Halfway through the first season, I am impressed.

I also thought the first season was quite well done.

Season 2 - Not so much.
