What we watching? – Mudspike at the movies

That priest was hilarious.

Oh man, this looks like a hilarious mashup of Monty Python, Knives Out, and Clue.

Me and SWMBO have discovered The Recruit on netflix. It is delicious. The action is fun and crunchy and cool and the writing is smart and funny and cool, the setting is interesting as are the characters who aren’t perfect but work just fine. Been a while since I had such a jolly good time watching TV.

I had vaguely heard of it, but like a lot of ‘spy thrillers’ I really have to be in the mood… One thing that constantly bugs me is personal cell phones in a SCIF

However I just checked IMDB and the review summary reads (in part):

“The show’s fresh spy genre approach, focusing on CIA lawyers, and its blend of action, humor, and character-driven storytelling are celebrated. However, some criticize its predictability, lack of realism, and implausible plot and character development.”

Especially the bit in italics, it might just be the most realistic spy show yet. I reckon I will have to watch this.

Meanwhile. I watched Bugonia last night.

I’m not sold on the ending but overall I thought it was really good. Fine performances by the three main actors and if Jesse Plemons doesn’t receive at least an Oscar nomination then there is something rotten in the State of Denmark

A remastered Cloud Dancer is on Amazon Prime. The movie is awful. But the Pitts flying is pretty great.

The “you’re going the wrong way” scene where Candy is mimicking an alcoholic at the drivers warning them, followed by the skeletons making momentary appearances is gut busting and comic genius of the highest order. Like much of that movie. Bring tears to my eyes every time I see it.

That’s quite a trailer! Had more blood than I was expecting.

I have never heard of anyone bleeding from acro. Bloodshot eyes, yes. I’ve had them. I guess Caradine’s character was supposed to be suffering from some unnamed congenital weakness and maybe that could explain it. But given all the other nonsense in the film I doubt they hired a consultant to get the medicine right.

Just watched “weapons”

Highly HIGHLY recommended. It was exceptionally well paced, completely unexpected and wonderfully cast.

Mental. Bloody mental

Is that the movie where a bunch of kids suddenly & mysteriously disappear?

If so, it has been on my ‘wishlist’ for a while…

Yes thats the one. Really enjoyed it

Sweet. It isn’t on ‘free’ streaming with my subscriptions yet, but I am sure I could find it somewhere

And for the record. I could have worded my previous post a bit better. A bunch of kids suddenly & mysteriously disappearing is not on my wishlist - this movie is :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I haven’t read the books, but I saw the Chinese adaptation before the Netflix version. The latter was a bit disappointing, in my opinion, but I suspect the average Netflix viewer would not sit through 30 episodes.

I will say, I want to get into the trilogy because the ideas seem thought-provoking but I heard the books are not an easy read because they go heavy on the science and certain concepts. What are your thoughts?

They do. But it isn’t insurmountable, read the first book and if you can wrap your head around the concept of the Sophon you will be fine. Books two and three really pick up the pace, either the translation is better or they were better written (or both) but I actually thought book 3 was the best of the trilogy.

That said, some of the concepts I struggled with and just accepted what was happening without trying to understand it, such as collapsing 3D space into two dimensions.

And without going too far into spoiler territory, there are worse things ‘out there’ than the Trisolarans.

This makes the dark forest theory even scarier. :astonished:  Thanks for the input. Now, I’m more interested in tackling the books.
