What we watching? – Mudspike at the movies

Watched “The Shootist” again today.

It has been 45 years since I first saw the movie in the theater and as irrational as it may be I do not think I will ever be able to watch the film and not have his on screen death affect me.

I like films that are inspiring. Call me sensitive… I eat it up. Ford vs Ferrari was great. So was Rush and The world’s Fastest Indian

Word.

This.

For the first time in quite a few viewings I have a couple of movies to recommend.

An Unfinished Life (2005)

Morgan Freeman, Robert Redford, and Jennifer Lopez. Good cast with a watchable story line. Has a 7/10 rating on IMDb. For me the weakest member of the cast was Jennifer. Redford and Freeman were always believable but in more than one instance Jennifer’s performance came off weak when on the screen with one of those two. Still think the film is worth a viewing.

American Traitor: The Trial of Axis Sally (2021)

Just got finished watching this one a few minutes ago. I knew of Axis Sally, and Tokyo Rose for that matter, but I never really gave Sally and Rose much thought or delved into reaserching their stories when it came to all things WW2. This movie covers Sally’s trial after the war and includes flashback sequences that depict her actions and the alleged circumstances around them that caused her to act as she did during the war. Not saying it is a documentary by any means but I started watching before I knew Pacino was one of the main Players in the film. Have to say he gave a superb performance.

Do not know if it is the subject matter and how it is being portrayed or the timing of the movie but it has to me an extremely low 5.5/10 rating on IMDb. To me it is a solid 7+.

Bonus film review:

White Lightning (1973)

Burt nearing the peak of his popularity. He had already done Deliverance and The Longest Yard and Smokey and the Bandit were not that far in the future. If for no other reason it is worth the watch for nostalgia sake for those of us old enough to remember watching his movies as they were released during his heyday.

Just happened to be looking at random videos on Youtube and this popped up as recommended. Didn’t even know this was coming. Looks interesting. At least from the trailer.

Wow, impressive production values! And big Hooray for Tom Felton! :open_mouth:

I just might make time for that one.

I really don’t get the whole James bond hype train. I’m not saying they are bad, some are even quite good. But I just don’t get the whole deal with it.
Daniel Craig is a seriously unlikeable bloke in my eyes as well. He just radiates this superior air that winds me up.
Has a face like if you gave him gold nuggets every morning, he wouldn’t be happy till they are polished

Considering all the hype you have seen over the years since its release I suspect you will be disappointed with the movie @Aginor.

Where is the disapprove/dislike button :p. Die hard is still good., but maybe not excellent.

And yes, it’s a Christmas movie. Although Die Hard 2 is more so. :stuck_out_tongue:

Just saw No Time To Die. Good movie but hated how they ended the Craig arc.

Craig is my favorite Bond actor so far because his character has the physical build and alpha-male attitude of a real-life spec ops/black ops operative. I particularly like his story arc because they relied less on whimsical gadgets and more on proper manual of arms. Seeing Bond and the supporting characters clear hallways and rooms with some sense of tactical competence lays enough foundational realism that you can overlook the whackiness of the villians and their plans. Add the emotional layer and character development spanning 15 years and you identify with the character and what he feels. None of the other bonds had character development or an emotional side to them. They were sociopathic playboy assassins. Craig’s Bond grew from an emotionally damaged playboy assassin to a normal person who happens to be an MI6 operative.

Which leads me to what I hated about the ending (spoilers):

Craig’s Bond had so much emotional turmoil from trusting and becoming vulnerable to women he loved, only to be betrayed or have some situation occur where he thought he was betrayed, making him regress into the distrusting cold killer again. Towards the end of No Time To Die, he’s finally trusting and loving towards Madeline, and clearly wants to settle down with her and their daughter. He has this closure and a chance at happiness. Then it’s cruelly robbed from him by the dying villain, who infects him with a nanomachine virus specifically programmed to kill Madeline and their daughter. Now he can never see them again, thanks to a forced plotline device claiming that human-engineered nanomachines can’t be countered. And how did they not get fried by his EMP watch anyway? So he chooses to die from Royal Navy cruise missiles that, thanks to another fabricated plot device, can’t be aborted after launch when all cruise missiles in real life can be reprogrammed or aborted mid-flight. “But they needed to destroy the lab on the island with the strike.” Not after Bond went back, killed everyone, and blasted the lab. “But then he, Madeline, and their daughter would be on the run forever.” Why? Spectre is dead. Safin is dead. All enemies connected to Bond and Madeline are dead. Even if they weren’t, how many times has Craig’s Bond gone off the grid during a movie?

I’d rather have him defeat the villian, abort the cruise missiles, call in a cleanup crew, quarantine until the nanomachines are dealt with, then reunite with Madeline and their daughter, and retire from MI6.

I cried in the theater.

No Time to Die was a lot better than I was expecting overall - very good action but seemed like Malik was another criminally underused Villain. Love scenes in Bond no thanks. Thought Craig was one of the best Bonds but Casino Royale was hard to beat for me.

Just been watching another sad story.

Outlaw Justice

Took me way too long to place one of the cameo actors. Danny Sullivan had a couple of scenes where our heroes save the wagon train he is part of from being robbed.

Overall a pretty lame effort.
