I’m a fan of the Bond formula and have seen every film multiple times. Owned many of them on laser disc, got them all on DVD, then Bluray. Didn’t bother with the 4K as I heard they weren’t great transfers (only the Craig ones are in 4K right now).
I enjoy them for what they are, not for what they aren’t. The only thing that was ever serious about them was the money and effort spent filming them. The rest has always been ridiculous and only those who weren’t paying attention ever believed them to be anything else.
I got bored quick and quit watching. A few weeks ago there was a recipe for Dolgona (a Korean candy which featured quite gruesomely in the show). I made a bunch for my daughter’s “mall date” with a half dozen friends. I included pin needles. It was a HUGE hit. At one point an old Korean dude walked over quite nostalgic to see kids (albeit kids who are a bit old for it) playing.
I just bought the CD/DVD/book set of Let it Be. Have all of them since they started with Sgt Pepper.
I also have the Anthology from the 90s on Laserdisc. Yes, LD.
I am curious what the SiFi fans here think of Apple+'s “Foundation”. I am enjoying it. However, until three weeks ago, I had never even heard of the books by Asimov. And honestly, now that I’ve finished the first volume, I am finding Asimov’s work hard to love. There is a great deal of galactic politics discussed over bourbon and cigars. The cool gadgets are atomic dishwashers. Meanwhile, the show based on the books, in title only–practically, is being pilloried. There is plenty that is over the top. And much of the physics is downright embarrassing. But as a show it mostly works for me.
I am enjoying the TV series. I read the books as a kid, and Asimov is a fantastic author, but generally is considered terrible at character writing (he excels in world building though, especially given how long ago these were written, early 50’s I think). The TV series sort of suffers from this flaw, in that as the story jumps between the generations, switching from no-name to anon, then it all gets hard to be compelling TV viewing. It certainly looks like they spent a fair bit of money on it, and I think Lee Pace is doing great as Day Empire. There’s certainly a lot of things worse to watch right now.
The Beverly Hillbillies on Amazon Prime. A favorite of my youth.
Sadly the picture quality so far in the season one Black & White episodes is not that great even after being restored. Having seen the reruns as a kid when the negatives were still of fairly decent quality the picture quality of these restored episodes does come up quite a bit short of what I remember.
Foundation wasn’t written as a novel, at least not until the later books.
The early books are a collection of novellas, which were themselves originally published in serial form in SF magazines of the day. Hence the first one is about Hari and takes place pre-Foundation establishment. The next is 50 years later. Then on and on at each “Seldon crisis” up until the Mule and then the 2nd Foundation. This is a main reason why I think the series has been often described as unfilmable.
Look at I, Robot. That film was based on ideas introduced in the book but other than Calvin’s name there was no other connection to any of the stories it contained.
Many things we take for granted now were new in his era and things we see as very old he saw as timeless…not much to be done about it, but it does mean first-time 21st century readers may not be amazed the way readers in the 50s were.
The Robot novels with R Daneel Olivaw and Elijah Bailey are more conventionally written as they were always novels from the start. I think they could probably be made into good SF mysteries if someone tried.
International economical interdependence will keep any serious stuff from ever happening. Look at the stuff in your home. It’s all made in China. China wants to keep making that stuff, and the rest of the world wants to keep buying it.
Sure there are tensions, but the notion of a ww3 with China is ridiculous imo.
As a fan of the book I went into it with VERY low expectations, but needlessly so! The show is actually very good!
I am super happy about it.
Yes, it is in some things VERY different from the books. Which is OK with me, it has to.
Ans no, I don’t like all the changes, but the atmosphere is there, the acting is nice, the German translation is… not great but OK I guess, but the visuals fit and it just feels like Wheel of Time to me.
The first episode is a bit of a lore dump and comes across a bit cheesy at times (remember the first Game of Thrones episode? Similar here), but it only gets better.
I’ll give it a solid 8.5/10 so far, and I recommend everyone to give it a chance. If you like Fantasy that is.
In case you wondered about the mediocre reviews at Amazon (and partly elsewhere): Sadly there is quite a lot of brigading going on right now, I hope it will die down soon.
Just give the first few episodes a try if you are into Fantasy, and judge it yourself.
Btw. If we can find a few Mudspikers who watch it and want to talk about it, I’d love to make a thread.
Just shoot me a PM or post here if you are interested. I’m a huge WoT fan and would love to talk about the similarities and differences with y’all (preferably while still avoiding spoilers of course). So much great stuff in there that you can easily miss, just like in the books.
