WOWZA, this looks like straight out of an Ace Combat game!
I know. Right!
I’m working on a mission for March Hip Month…something about criminals/terrorists capturing the Persepolis ruins threatening to blow them up if their demands are not met. The Iranian National Police (I assume that’s the skin) have to go in, defeat the terrorists and defuse the bombs…
…which is where I’m stuck. Since Mi-8 Hips don’t have opposable thumbs, they are lousy at bomb defusing…so… I can easily have them shoot up the place but that doesn’t really save the ruins…thoughts?
Just in case you hadn’t seen this one before:
Sling load flails are a suitable alternative and they do work.
Nope I caught it. Fantastic screen shots! I like you you added in your research stuff.
There are two other archeological sites in DCS’s Iran. I will have to do a “deep dive” on them too.
For Persepolis, I found this video pretty cool.
I remember the first time I saw that animation, I think I was crashing the Horten. It caught me completely off guard!
It is one of the Ploesti raids. However, on the longer version, you can see a string of bombs dropping from another bomber.
I did some Hornet flying today, carrier operations and aerial refueling.
Ready!
First refuel. It worked pretty quickly, I was surprised! My rendezvous was a bit slow and I missed the basket once, but that’s it.
Then I flew around a bit, supersonic and so on, to burn a bit of fuel.
Went to the tanker again, trying out some radar functions. (no worries, I deactivated the radar shortly after this screenshot).
This time it worked immediately. Very happy pilot here.
Now, trying to remember that landing procedure…
Bolter!
This looks a tad better…
Meh. #1 wire and not exactly centered… But hey, I haven’t landed on a carrier in more than a year, and the plane is still in once piece!
Looking forward to more Hornet soon. I have to test some weapons, the targeting pod, and the data link next. And do some more landings, those were rather poor.
Can’t wait to try it in VR!
More Hornet flying today.
I downloaded and adjusted a carrier group template so I don’t have to create it newly each time.
Then I flew a few carrier traps. And then I created a small weapons training mission.
Today’s goal: learn TGP basics and drop some JDAMs.
Takeoff!
The targets are somewhere down there…
Searching… Aha!
Rolling in.
Boom!
(a few times)
In real life this would have been a kill, the bomb impacted right next to the ship.
Some rockets:
Then the A-10 pilot in me took over and I went in for a gun run.
Heading home.
WTF… I must have given that guy the wrong speed.
Hook skip bolter.
Next try went better.
#3 wire!
Parked. That was a nice mission. I learned a lot.
That new water looks…wet!
I know those ones weren’t but any potentially moving target is better served by a LGB, or perhaps a Maverick.
Busier carrier deck makes things look nicer than an empty one, that’s for sure!
Yet, no depth charges.
And how about a FW-190 carrying a torpedo!
So after watching recent Wags video, to have INS aligned properly in the Viper (with HUD steerpoint symbology working - which was my issue as of late) you have to wait with switching INS knob to NAV until INS status reaches 6 or less after the slash symbol on INS page on DED. Even though RDY flashes on DED and ALIGN on the HUD. Tested it and it works. So I took the Viper for a test flight, dropped some training bombs on the range (why not all emit smoke after impact is another mystery). Here are two screenshots from that flight.
A-10s were also conducting some A/G training.
Custom mission from the strait - protecting SAR mission from some pesky Fishbeds. The LGBs are for the ground work - there is a Nightawk crash landed in enemy territory, we will have to take it out after SAR mission is complete. Too bad Jester can’t operate the targeting pod. I still haven’t familiarized myself with it workings. Will have to improvise…
This MIG-21 took a Sidewinder up his tailpipe from a close range.
I did another flight. This time with some AI planes around.
…and immediately remembered why I became a grumpy person that doesn’t like to build missions in DCSW anymore This aspect of DCSW just sucks and needs urgent fixing. Since 2011.
The A-6 tanker crashed since it gave all its fuel to the Hornets.
The AI Hornets did this (I am the popular one that got crashed from both sides):
The AI Tomcats did this:
EDIT: Forgot to mention: Another AI Hornet flew over half the map, passing two allied airfields, on its way to the tanker that it never reached, as it crashed because of fuel starvation…
GRRRRRR…
