Mudspike 3rd Annual DCS Fall Fly-In

Mudspike 3rd Annual DCS Fall Fly-In

It’s been a year since our last Mudspike DCS Fall Fly-In. Although we might be stretching the definition of Fall a little, we will be hosting the 3rd Annual Mudspike DCS Fall Fly-In on the weekend of December 2-3, 2017.

DCS World 1.5.X and 2.1.X servers will be running with various sandbox-style multiplayer missions. Server connection details will be posted the week before the event as well as a proposed schedule of mission events or themes.

The Friday evening before the event we will be hosting the missions early. This would be a great time to check in, check your install and ability to connect to the servers and fly with some people in a very casual environment. Saturday and Sunday will follow that same pattern but Friday is an unofficial early start.

Virtual pilots of all experience levels are welcome!

If you have been putting off playing in a multiplayer environment then this is a perfect opportunity to give it a try. Even if it is only to log in and be part of a group, many of us are more than willing to help out, offer advice or work in some training time over the course of the event. None of us are experts on all of the modules in DCS World but many of us are willing to learn and share what we might know. (BeachAV8R edit – I might be there to show you what NOT to do as I demonstrate walking around after ejecting..) We do have a few real world pilots (civilian and military) and they are often willing to share their knowledge as long as it does not cross some conflict-of-interest or classified lines. It is quite a thing to work through (or even to listen in to) a cooperative combat environment with an Air Force officer in charge or to talk aviation with a skilled, learned commercial aviation pilot.

Some Additional Information

If you would like to put up a server, host or submit a mission for hosting, please send the @staff a private message and we will work out the details. We welcome all suggestions and help!

In the event of a major patch (DCS World 2.5, the release of Razbams Harrier, etc) we will do our best to accommodate the update but we would suggest that any patches/updates that occur on the Thursday/Friday before the event may not make it to the servers/mission designers in time for testing or adaptation.

Voice communications on TeamSpeak 3 are strongly recommended. Rest assured that although we all hate the sound of our own voices, we never have a problem with the sounds of someone else. We have a policy of having an open and friendly voice communication space. Connection information can be found in the Events tab at the top of the forum page or here.

If you have any requests for a mission or module that you would like to see, let us know in the comments below and we can make sure that there are some client spots available in at least some of the missions. If you are looking to learn more about a specific system or tactic, please let us know in the comments and we will see what we can do.

We will make an effort to have at least a few examples of all of the DCS World modules available in each mission. If you have a particular preference, we can do our best to meet demand for that module.

As usual, we will put up an AAR/Stories Fly-In thread in the AAR portion of the forums for screenshots, stories or discussion during the event.

Rules of The Road

In order to ensure fun play for everyone, there are some ground rules and/or guidelines listed below. In general, if a player is disrupting everyone else’s good time, they will be kicked and/or banned. We have never had to kick or ban anyone at Mudspike, and we’d really like to keep that trend going.

  • Shoot to Kill, Play to Have Fun. It’s not just a motto, it’s…ok, well, actually it is just a motto, but it’s a pretty good one. Play hard, but play nice and be fair;
  • No team-killing. Most (if not all) missions can be assumed to be CO-OP focused or CO-OP friendly with no adversary client positions unless specified in the title/briefing. If you feel the need to go fangs out, coordinate with players ahead of time and set up a PvP mission but at the very least, you are required to have the permission of everyone involved and to move off to an unoccupied area of the map;
  • No killing of the Tanker. We all know that tanking is a pain but please don’t take that out on the tanker, even if it is ‘an accident’ or ‘they made fun of my mother’;
  • No obscene language, TS3 or text. Not all folks enjoy obscene language, even if meant in good humor. Other folks may have friends/family reading the chat messages over their shoulder or listening in on external speakers and may hear what you intended as a closed room comment;
  • PLEASE use push-to-talk. Mouth-breathers and keyboard clacking can be very distracting for others;
  • Read the chat bar. Respect those who might not be on TS3. Remember to send text messages for important comms in addition to broadcasting over TS3 as not everyone may not be on TS3 or in the same channel. Be sure to know which key is used to access chat for the DCS modules you will be flying;
  • Runway/Carrier Operations. The standard rules used in previous fly-ins:
  1. There is an active runway in use as decided by the in-game ATC (who will at least make some effort to send you in the right direction). If there is doubt (or ATC is being quiet because someone else is taxiing), feel free to follow them to the active runway;
  2. Make an effort to announce on Teamspeak, or in chat, when you are about to take the runway or are on final and then announce when you are clear (landed and off the runway or are wheels up). Clear the runway/deck as fast as possible and then announce it (ie: “Skippy5 is clear of the active runway!”);
  3. With a carrier spot, initially select a spectators position and make sure that you are not spawning in on top of anyone (the deck is ‘clear’) and check in on Teakspeak/chat. When you do spawn in, if you are not taking off with the initial load of weapons/fuel, fold your wings and immediately taxi to a position that does not occupy the launch/landing portions of the deck (there are such spaces beside or behind the superstructure/tower);
  4. Access to the active runway is by priority order:
  • Emergency (damage or low fuel);
  • Landing;
  • Taking off:
  • Landing;

When I saw this post I blurted out Fly-in funk yea! and the date to my wife in my best “stand back woman, this is what I do” voice.

She went in the other room muttering “Yeah maybe.”

So all in all I think it went well and I am looking forward to it.

Hey Beach do you think we will be Harrier-ing for it? Inquiring minds…

Just in time to have a fast moving strike airframe. Count me in!

I asked for that…

But to answer your question - I certainly hope so. I mean, the Harrier looks great and certainly seems pretty darn complete, but I’ve literally scratched 1% of what it does (engines and flight controls). I haven’t loaded a weapon yet, tried out the NAV stuff beyond TACAN, or really explored the MFDs at all. So you definitely can’t use my opinion as the judge of completeness.

Someone needs to provide a link to all of them. The way skins in multiplayer currently work is you can select whichever skin you like that is available to that country. Everyone with that skin installed will see it, everyone else will just see the default skin.

I tell myself that every friggin’ day.

I got that covered…
I did one thread with the requests, one with the outcome and one with all the links…

I spent at least 20 hours trying to get that stupid Su33 carrier mission to work just so I (yes “I”…because it’s all about ME) could play with the wonderful new Su33 model with friends. And it never happened :frowning: So, yeah, I am in if I get any of those days off and will try to schedule a slot to host it.

This could be useful to someone.

I’ll try and be there. If I can get my PC fixed until then that is.
The Fly-Ins were quite fun the last few times. :slight_smile:
